Lindsey Criswell, MD, MPH, DSc, was vice chancellor of Research and chief of the UCSF Health Division of Rheumatology before being tapped to lead the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) in February 2021. In this fireside chat with Bob Wachter, she will describe her career journey, which has included roles as a researcher, mentor, and now the leader of a major institute at the NIH. We’ll discuss the most promising developments in rheumatology, the future direction of the NIH, the challenges faced by grant-funded and early career researchers, and the current climate for physician-scientists.

Speaker:
Lindsey A. Criswell, MD, MPH, DSc, became director of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) in February 2021. She previously served as vice chancellor of Research at the University of California, San Francisco, as well as professor and chief of the Division of Rheumatology at UCSF Health. Her research focuses on the genetics and epidemiology of human autoimmune disease, particularly rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. She also has mentored many students and junior faculty to independent research careers. Lindsey earned a bachelor’s degree in genetics and a master’s degree in public health from the University of California, Berkeley; a DSc in genetic epidemiology from the Netherlands Institute for Health Sciences, Rotterdam; and an MD from UCSF.
