Van der Velde, who has been working for nearly 30 years to cultivate giant sunflowers, set up scaffolding in his backyard to support the plant. Another sunflower he is growing—which is still getting taller—may even surpass the height of his current record contender.
According to the Guinness World Records, the tallest sunflower ever recorded stood at 9.17 meters. It was grown by Hans-Peter Schiffer in Kaarst, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, and the record was confirmed on August 28, 2014.
