A spectacular comet that may outshine even the brightest stars in the night sky is approaching our planet. The comet, initially mistaken as an asteroid, has been named C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS. Despite having an initial magnitude of 18, far too faint to be seen with the naked eye, the comet is now quickly approaching us. It will make its closest approach to Earth in October 2024 and could be the best one we will ever see in decades. However, there's a problem associated with it.

Named JD1, this galaxy is so far away that its light has taken 13.3 billion years to reach us. That means were seeing it as it was when the universe was only a few hundred million years old, just a fraction of its current age. JD1 is a small, ultra-faint galaxy. It is so faint that it would have been invisible to previous telescopes. It has a mass of only about 10,000 times that of the Sun, and it is forming stars at a rate of about one solar mass per year. JD1 is likely one of the first galaxies to form in the universe, and it is helping us to understand how galaxies evolved over time.
