I’ve gotta tell y’all what just happened to me at lunch on Route 66.
I stopped back at the Midpoint Cafe in Adrian, the exact middle of the route, and overheard a British accent asking the owner for a photo. His arms were covered in Route 66 tattoos. In 2020, stuck at home in Kent, England, he walked the entire route on his treadmill, tracking every mile from Chicago to LA and researching every town as he went. In 2023 he came and drove it for real and met the people he’d been reading about. Now he’s back with his son and his father, delivering the book he wrote about it to the people in its pages.
Sometimes we chase a story for two years. Sometimes one sits down at the next table.
