The painted images on Greek terracotta vessels can inspire the onlooker to play a game of finding and weaving a hidden message behind and beyond what is apparent to the eye. This lecture will explore a handful of the ancient Greek vases on view in the Hall of Antiquities in the Legion of Honor to unlock “surprises.”

About the curator
Louise Chu is associate curator of ancient art at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, and together with Renée Dreyfus, Distinguished Curator and George and Judy Marcus Curator in Charge of Ancient Art, cofounded the Ancient Art Council at the Museums. Over the years Chu has also worked closely with Dreyfus on exhibitions, catalogues, acquisitions, and research in antiquities as well as running and maintaining the Ancient Art Council. Chu completed her undergraduate (BA) and graduate studies (MA and PhD) at the University of California, Berkeley, specializing in classics.

This program is part of our “A Closer Look” series, a new curatorial lecture series exploring both the development of the Museums’ distinct collections and their art historical significance. Beginning at the Legion of Honor and expanding to the de Young soon, the series features in-depth presentations that highlight collection gems while demystifying creative practices that span thousands of years.
