Featuring scholars Michele Wallace, Joan Kee, Jacqueline Francis, and Susan Cahan, this roundtable discussion examines how Faith Ringgold’s work synthesizes a wealth of cultural influences, techniques, and schools of thought to expand and complicate the art historical canon.
Dr. Michele Wallace, professor emeritus of English (2017), women’s studies, and film studies at the City College of New York and the City University of New York Graduate Center, is founder and director of The Faith Ringgold Society, LLC, that has a mission to publish writings about artist Faith Ringgold. The daughter of Faith Ringgold, she has also written extensively on her mother’s work, including American People, Black Light: Faith Ringgold’s Paintings of the 1960s (Neuberger Museum 2010). She is currently working on an upcoming book The Mona Lisa Interview: Faith Ringgold’s French and American Collections, 1990–1999.
Joan Kee, PhD is professor in the history of art at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and a Ford Foundation Scholar-in-Residence at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. A contributing editor to Artforum, her books include Contemporary Korean Art: Tansaekhwa and the Urgency of Method and most recently, The Geometries of Afro Asia: Art Beyond Solidarity.
Jacqueline Francis, PhD, is professor and chair of the graduate program in visual and critical studies at California College of the Arts. She writes social histories of modern and contemporary art and visual culture of the United States, andis especially interested in the representation of ethno-cultural and racial identities and identifications.
Dr. Susan E. Cahan is an art historian, curator, and educator who specializes in contemporary art and the history of museums. Her research focuses on the relationship between social and artistic change and the confluence of factors that shape the way culture is imagined, discussed, and advanced. She is the recipient of an Arts Writers Grant from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, among other awards.
