Often overlooked, the collection of European sculpture at the Legion of Honor includes rare, significant, and enigmatic examples of sculpture rife for a closer look. With new research, this lecture focuses on Southern European sculpture from the early Renaissance through the 18th century, transporting people from Northern California to far flung places across the globe, from Gothic Spain to Medici Florence to Baroque Rome.
About the curator
Jeffrey Fraiman, PhD, is assistant curator in the department of European decorative arts and sculpture, responsible for the Museums’ collection of medieval to modern sculpture. Most recently, he was curator for the exhibition Art and War in the Renaissance: The Battle of Pavia Tapestries at the de Young (2024–2025). Previously, he worked at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where he was co-editor of Italian Renaissance and Baroque Bronzes in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (2022) and contributed to numerous exhibitions including Valentin de Boulogne: Beyond Caravaggio (2016–17).
