The Baltimore City Department of Public Works maintains a historic public works system that has served the Baltimore region for more than a century, providing essential water and waste management services to approximately 1.8 million people across northern Maryland.
This work includes protecting the region’s drinking water at Loch Raven and Liberty reservoirs, monitoring watershed health and water quality, maintaining water treatment infrastructure, and managing the city’s landfill and waste diversion initiatives.
Much of this infrastructure was built more than 100 years ago. Today, DPW is investing in maintenance, modernization, and long-term planning to preserve these systems while adapting them to meet the needs of a growing region.
At the center of this work are the employees who protect the watershed, manage waste, maintain facilities, and provide essential services every day, in all conditions.
By building on Baltimore’s history of public works while planning for the next century, DPW is working to protect these critical systems and continue providing safe, reliable services for generations to come.
