This reproduction based on a design from Dynasty Warriors (Zhang Fei's "spear") caught my eye because of the unique blade shape and overall look. It seemed promising, and I was curious to find out how well the two piece haft construction would work. Well, unfortunately it turned out to be quite baffling, and one of the most fragile things I've ever tested.
It's unusually heavy, the threaded connection is a weak spot, the round haft makes edge alignment difficult, the edge is too dull to cut effectively, and worst of all... it broke right off. From *light* tatami cutting no less... I didn't even get to anything that would truly test the structural integrity.
So generally "you get what you pay for" is a good rule of thumb, but only if the price isn't over-inflated.
Interestingly a sword from the same store I tested back in 2019 was of much higher quality and performed very well. Must have been a different maker.
