Recently, another viral claim started spreading after a content creator falsely claimed that the Dominican Republic had “84,000 new HIV cases” connected to American Passport Bros.
That statement was false.
The number being referenced was the estimated HIV prevalence count for the entire Dominican Republic population — not “84,000 new cases,” and definitely not cases connected to Passport Bros. Yet social media ran with the narrative anyway, and many people in the Black community repeated the claim as if large numbers of Black American men were traveling overseas, catching HIV, and infecting wives back home.
