Tech Tangents | 8088 PC Online after Much Headache @TechTangents | Uploaded July 2022 | Updated October 2024, 20 hours ago.
I've been wanting to experiment with getting an original PC online and networked with other systems for a number of reasons. I decided that the work I was doing for my office wiring was as good a reason as any to roll it into my current project for a video...was that ever a mistake.

I still don't know what is wrong with the IBM PCs. They are perfectly functional in every other regard. The exact same CF cards in the exact same XT-IDE adapters work flawlessly in the Compaq. I've done full disk wipes on the CF cards and reinstalled, nothing works to reliably get the IBMs booting. I'm probably going to try getting a brand new XT-IDE and CF card to start my diagnostics from scratch.
I didn't speed test the network connection at all because it doesn't matter in the slightest. Period correct drives for a system would be so small that you could fill them in less than 10 minutes of file transfers at the cards max speed. And any modern drive implementation can just be removed and copied to directly for larger file transfers. This setup is really only useful for adhoc access of a handful of files at once, like accessing a single game's files.
Here are some ways to help me make more videos!
