Tech Tangents | New Server Build Pt3: Final setup and Tape Drive @TechTangents | Uploaded January 2019 | Updated October 2024, 23 hours ago.
I get some boot drives put in the server, get Ubuntu installed, and put the server through its paces!
That's it for the build for now! There are still plenty more parts to get and changes to make. I'll make some update videos along the way so you can see how that goes.
I guess I'll mention my Powershell remark here to clarify it a bit. For Windows, Powershell is a massive improvement and has made some great changes. Linux/UNIX/POSIX was already there though. There's no reason to switch when what you have is already very good. It's not a "grass is greener on the other side" situation. Both fields have green grass, so why climb the fence?
I know this is not the most ideal server build out there. I never claimed it was. This is what I was able to put together thanks to help from awesome viewers. If I were only able to budget this myself, it wouldn't have been 1/4 as good and I would have ended up just buying a complete 2U server for $300 and settling on whatever it came with. So this build, despite it's fault, in my eyes is excellent. I have also already been offered some more parts to put in it that will help alleviate some of it's problems.
Why Ubuntu(I know how it's pronounced) server? I like it. I will consider CentOS at some point because Davinci Resolve is only supported on RedHat and that's the closest I'm going to get to that. But I'll wait and see how Resolve pans out on Ubuntu once I have a GPU. It it's fine then I'll just stick with it.
