YouTube is doubling its full monetization requirement from 4,000 to **8,000 watch hours** for new YPP applicants beginning February 1, 2027 — and for me, that was the final push to rethink how much unpaid time I’m willing to give this platform.
For months, I’ve watched my own video impressions follow the same frustrating pattern: an initial burst of distribution followed by a dramatic collapse to a trickle. I’ve changed thumbnails, titles, hooks and formats. I’ve studied the analytics. I’ve listened to all the advice.
Meanwhile, each original, AI-free video I make can take **10–15 hours** to plan, shoot, edit and publish.
So in this video, I’m doing something I probably should have done a long time ago: **the math.**
What could the traffic represented by 8,000 watch hours realistically earn a small creator? How does that compare with simply working those same hours at a $15/hour part-time job? And at what point does “just do it because you love it” stop being reasonable advice?
I love dolls. I love making videos. I love the community that has grown around this channel.
But my time has value too.
I’m not quitting YouTube. I’m not quitting dolls. And I’m definitely not replacing authentic, handmade creativity with an AI content factory.
I’m just no longer willing to chase monetization.
