Ligeriana, Katia Caré dir.
O quanta qualia sunt illa sabbata
Que semper celebrat superna curia;
Que fessis requies, que merces fortibus,
Cum erit omnia Deus in omnibus.
Vere Iherusalem illic est civitas,
Cujus pax jugis est, summa jucubditas
Ubi non prevenit rem desiderio
Nec desiderio minus est premium.
Quis Rex, que curia, quale palatium,
Que pax , que requies quod illum gaudium
Hujus participes exponat glorié
Si tantum sentium, possint exprimere
Nostrum est interim mentem erigere
Et totis patriam votis appetere,
Et ab Iherusalem a Babilonia
Post longa regredi, tandem exilia.
Illic molestis finitis omnibus,
Securi cantica Syon cantabimus
Et juges gratias de donis gratie
Beata referet plebs tibi Domine.
Illic est sabbato succedet sabbatum :
Perpes letitia sabbatizantium,
Nec ineffabilis cessabunt jubilii
Quos decantabimus et nunc et angeli.
Perenni Domino, perpes sit gloria
Ex quo sunt, per quem sunt, in quo sunt omnia;
Amen.

Translations provided by the artists:
Oh, you who made me drunk
With every cup we drained,
You, who painted your eye-lids
With the kohl of astonishment,
and you, who caused my tears to flow
When you rebuffed me without cause.
Place your hand on my heart, for no water
Can extinguish the flame of love.
Ô toi qui m’as enivré
quand tu m’as repoussé sans raison.
This is a mistral interpretation.

Dum esset Salvator in monte, imponens aptissima nomina
Discipulis suis, vocavit Iacobum et Ihohannem Boanerges,
Quod est filii tonitrui.
Sicut enim vox tonitrui in rota mundi sonat,
Sic in omnem terram exivit sonus predicacionum beati Iacobi,
Ainsi le son des prédications du bienheureux Jacques se répandit dans le monde entier ;

Ch’anima tormentosa in suon funeste
umile, dovea pianger mai sempre e
sospirar. Pur da nova cagion chiamato son
d’Amor si cant’e al suon.
Io, ch‘amante infelice, ceneri fredde a pena
omai, sona guerriera tromba pur contro chi
d’amor già morto fu.
Ecco a Battaglia me rappella, ahimè,
d’amor, d’honor, di fè.
Ei potea pur lasciarmi
sepolt’infra i cipressi o nel sasso d’Elisa
algente e dur.
rubelli fur. E in pace me lasciar dopo il
penar mort almen riposar.
fiamme, altri ardori, e divina beltà, scesa

Crai crai*, tu perzì accusì me fai,
tu perzì accusì me fai donna scortese
che dai belli parole e tristi attese.
Auciello ca prumitt’a la speranza
e le promesse sue nun tene mai.
Tu sì madonna a questa simiglianza,
sempre me dice aspecta ch‘avarrai.
*crai = domani
You know, the crow has this habit:
when she sings she always says “crai”
Crai crai* that’s what you say to me
you unkind lady, you give me
nice words but sad expectations.
A bird that promises hope
and never keeps its promises
You, my lady, are truly like that bird;
you always say to me: “Wait a little more”
You know what Pinta said to Carmosina:
“Better today the egg than tomorrow the hen”

Fresca vergene donzella,

Bele Aelis rose when morning came,
Went into a field to play,
Full of game, in sheer delight,
Then she calls a love to mind
With so long she's been inflamed:
Sighing, she now exclaimed:
"God, how I live in misery
Since I'm beaten night and day,
For my sweetheart's sake!
But the more my mother beats me,
The less will she ever take
My wild thoughts away!"

Arise, come toward me, beautiful one,
Noble and worthy bride!
I will raise my banner on the watchtower,
To accomplish what I intend.
Do not be afraid, my sister,
You must pass this way;
Your noble strength will be of no avail,
you will leave your pledge here!
Ride on, my love!
You will never meet any resistance.
Wherever you say, I will lie down.
Don't be afraid!
O that my beloved may be steadfast!
Please look at me
gently end graciously,
there is really nothing wrong in it!
Perfection of beauty, listen to me.
I tell you, without a doubt,
You shall not be redeemed with silver,
but you will have to surrender your body.
Naked without a garment,
Do not think you will be doing something wrong.
Something that is customary
must be granted freely.
Your voice, my love, I heard,
I heard your petition.
Since I have desired your love,
Ride and don't stop!
I will give my body to those who strike me,
Stop and carry me off if I hold back;
I promise you, gentle lord,
you will not hear me say a word.
Ask of me and I will give it
You will never be turned away.
Food, clothing, and conjugal rights:
You will have a good destiny!
Do not say "there is no hope,”
Be careful what you do,
And do not fight:
A magpie does not plunder its own nest.
Repair the crack in the house.
You will be taking a wife if you marry,
And then you will see no more briars of thorns in your meadow,
As you always thoroughly glean your vineyard.
Don't be shy, my gentle lord.
Land that is worked
bears best before frost or snow.
Make wide the site of your tent,
I beg you, my sweet beloved,
Do not let your voice be heard,
For that would be great folly.
I'll put a peg in a sure place without further ado
To have your maidenhead
it is a uphold custom!
Hâte-toi vers moi, Belle,
Ici tu laisseras ton gage.
Mon ami, je te prie, chevauche,
Tu ne rencontreras aucune résistance.
Je m'étendrai là où tu me diras,
N'aie aucune crainte.
Tais-toi, et empare-t'en comme un voleur;
Prends femme, marie-toi.

O cieco mondo di lusinghe pieno
Mortai veleno in ciascun tuo dìlecto
O blind world full of temptations
deadly poison in each of thy pleasures
deceitful, full of delusions and with suspicion
Therefore tell all who are never concerned
about this but who would like to taste the fruits of sweet flowers
Crazed is he who turns to thee
if he, for less than nought, loses that possession
which seems to be above all other love and always will be
Therefore ...
Oh blinde Welt voller Verlockungen
tötliches Gift in jedem Deiner Vergnügen trügerisch,

dann hätte all mein Leid ein Ende.

In dolce e lieto stile,
lo non pensavo mai di più cantar
Ch'anima tormentosa,
In suon funesto umile,
Ceneri fredde a pena
Dal rogo riportai I'infaust'amor,
Sento che più non lice,
Con roca e stanca lena,
Narrar le fiamme antiche e'l vecchio ardor.
Hora che novo sol
M'accende, e vuol ch'io di lui canti sol.
Questa lacera spoglia
D'un cor trafitto ed arso,
Miserabile arcanzo dei martir,
Invece che l'accoglia
Povero avello e scarso,
Amor tiranno anche pur vuol ferir.
Eccomi fatto egual
Scuopo al suo stral dispietato e mortal.
lo non intesi mai,
Che si tragga di tomba mai
Nemico estinto, a farli guerra più,
E pur amor ornai
Sona guerriera tromba,
Pur contro chi d'amor già morto fù.
Ecco a battaglia me
Rappella, ahimè, d'amor, d'onor, di fé.
Ei potea pur lascìarmi
Sepolt' infra i cipressi,
O nel sasso d'Elisa, a1gente e dur.
E con più gloria, l'armi
Volger contro quei stessi
Cori ch'al regno suo rubelli fur.
E in pace me lasciar,
Dopo il penar, mort' almen riposar.
Pur se di nuovo vuoi,
Ch'io porti il cor piagato,
Di tue quadrella, o dispietato arcier:
S'ancor da lacci tuoi
Mi vuoi pres' e legato,
E vuoi ch'avampi del tuo fuoco, ò fier.
Deh, meco almen fa sì,
Ch' arda, così colei che mi ferì
E se tu vuoi ch'io canti
Nove fiamme, altri ardor
E divina beltà, scesa dal ciel,
Fa sì ch'anch' io mi vanti,
D'esser, tra casti allori,
Degno di non morir sempre di gel.
Ch'i più canori augei
lo emulerei, sì dolce canterei.
--------------------------------------
Me voici désormais
Il pouvait pourtant me laisser
Qui furent à son pouvoir rebelles;
Ah! Si tu veux encore
Que mon coeur soit blessé
Par tes flèches cruelles, impitoyable archer;
Si encore en tes liens
Tu me veux faire prisonnier,
Si tu veux, ô cruel, qu'à ton feu je me brûle,

Celle verge delgie
Est la Virge Marie

De ceu ne douteis mie,

I sing a new song,
good and beautiful,
of a virgin, a maiden a mother and servant,
and who with her fine flesh redeemed us,
and who calls us all to her great clarity.
We were told of this by Isaiah in a prophecy:
a flower shall come forrh from the toot of Jesse
a glorious great kingdom.
That prophecy has now indeed come true.
That tender root of Isaiah is the Virgin Mary.
For us the flower, and I do not doubt this at all,
means Jesus Christ, who suffered on the cross
in order that those condemned to perish might live.

Word of God incarnate
In the hay he is reclining

He gives me back more than my virtues,
Mary, your little son.

Louons l'amour divin,

Il me prend le cœur sans réserve
Il me rend plus que le courage,
Marie, ton fils tout petit.

O Jesus, redeemer of all,
give ear to the prayers of thy suppliants.

lest mankind should perish

To expiate the common guilt of mankind,

He who does not wish to hear songs
Should beware of our company,
For I sing to make my heart glad
And to amuse my companions,
And even more because possibly
I might please my lady with my song;
For I have no other desire, neither
For amusement nor fine manners.
I wish that the fair lady of my thoughts
Would hold me close and kiss me;
And I might sleep with her and obtain first all,
And then sleeves and necklaces [her favours]
And then, best of all, demand her grace,
For I shall never be conquered
By gifts or by favours, if I cannot
Obtain what I desire the most.
A man without desire is good for naught,
He who does not desire the best
And does not commit himself to love
Can hardly be handsome or valiant.
Pleasure and well-being come from love,
Through love a man learns courtesy;
Love provides the skill and the wit
That protects its great value.
He who blames a lover for his folly
Has the wisdom of a young boy;
If one wishes to behave correctly
One cannot be a skilful lover.
He who can do foolish things
Knows all he needs to about love:
I neither know much nor pretend to,
And I fervently wish not to be taught.
Blessed be he who was first jealous,
For it was a work of great courtesy;
Jealousy has made me wary
Of slanderers and the envious,
From jealousy I have learnt
How to devote myself
To one alone, for I wish no other,
And even refrain from courting them.
A fine betrayal that does not ruin
A good reputation is better than
Being jealous of another's happiness.
If God should wish to create a couple,
I wish him to harvest female fidelity,
Although there should never be so much of it
That she asks where I go or where I have been,
For I am totally at her disposition.
Monsignor Audiart, I have learnt from you
How to be considered truly polite by all:
I sing of one sole woman and I conceal another,
Through her I am the lord of Miraval.
You will find someone to teach you to love
Only with difficulty, for I learnt it from you.
-----------------
Celui qui n'a pas de désir est un vaurien, et celui qui ne désire pas ce qu'il y a de plus raffiné et qui ne s'engage pas en amour ne peut guère être gaillard ni preux;

Nativity contrafactum of Janequin's "Il estoit une fillette Qui vouloit sçavoir le jeu d'amours", a bawdy song written in 1540 (which you can hear at youtu.be/K5R2RnooGYg). It was published by Jehan Porée in "Grande et belle Bible des Noëls" (1581).
The video image is taken from the book cover of "La grande Bible des Noëls tant vieux que nouveaux", Benoït Rigaud, 1550.
Il estoyt une fillette
Que le filz de Dieu voulut aymer,
Ung jour qu'elle estoyr seulette,
Grace il a faict en elle imprimer,
Et luy fit dire et exprimer,
Par un messager triomphant,
Que sans son honneur opprimer,
Ell' concevrait de Dieu, l'enfant.
Elle se trouva grossette,
Et quand vint le terme d'enfanter,
En une povre establette,
Ou le vent du Nord venait venter.
Fut contrainte de s'arreter
Et l' enfantement attendant,
Joseph ne faisait qu'escourer
S'il oirroit pleurer cet enfant.
Le petit enfant nacquit,
La Vierge fit son acquit,
Joseph doucement l'embrasse,
Et le baisa fort,
Il y prenait son deduict,
La Vierge luy fit son lict
Lasne et le bœuf en la cresche
Ne luy firent tort.
Lors voyez venir Collette,
Alix. Martin, Guill'mette et Roger,
L'un luy donne sa houlette,
L'autre son petit chien à berger.
Roch luy voulut faire menger
D'un petit pasté bien friant,
Collin. Lerot, Marc et Roger
Courraient à qui courroit devant,
Perrot lui donne un habit,
Pan sa houlette fourbit,
Quand Lubin sut les nouvelles,
Apporta du rost,
Cendrin en ouit le bruit,
Qui s'en vint chargé de fruits,
Et despouilla sa cotelle
Pour courir plus fort.
Eux arrives en si honneste point,
Vous eussiez ouy chanter si doulcement,
En musettes, flustes et contrepoint,
Chacun avoir porte son instrument.

There was a maid
whom the Son of God wished to love;
one day when she was alone,
he implanted grace in her
and through a triumphant messenger
had it told to her and explained
that without compromising her honour
she would conceive from God the Child.
She found herself with child
and when the time came to give birth,
in a poor stable
into which the north wind blew
she was compelled to stop,
and awaiting the birth
Joseph merely listened
whether he could hear the child cty.
The little Infant was born,
the Virgin performed her due,
Joseph gently embraced her
and kissed the Infant firmly and delighted in it.
The Virgin made him a bed,
the ass and ox in the manger
did him no harm.
Now here come Collette,
Alix, Martin, Gulll'merte and Roger;
one gives him his crook,
another his Iittle shepherd dog.
Roch wanted him to eat
a good pasty,
Collin, Lerot, Marc and Roger
ran as fast as they could;
Perrot gave him a jacket,
Pan his polished crook;
when Lubin heard the news
he brought a roast;
Cendrin heard the rumour
and came loaded with fruit,
and threw off his cloak
to run the faster.
When they arrived at such an appropriate hour
you could hear them sing so sweedy
with musettes and flutes in harmony,
each of them had brought his instrument.

Nova nova - Ave fit ex Eva
Gabriel of High degre
He came down from Trinity
From Nazareth to Galilee
I met a maiden in a place
He kneeled down before her face
And said « Hail Mary full of grace »
When the maiden heard tell of this
She was full sore abasht ywis
And weened that she hat done amiss
Then said the angel « dread not you
For ye be conceived with great virtue
Whose name shall be called Jesu
It is not yet six weeks agone
Sin Elizabeth conceived John
As it prophesied beforn
Then said the maiden
Verily I am your servant right truly
Ecce ancilla Domini

L'ange lui dit alors: « Ne crains rien,
Depuis qu'Elisabeth a conçu Jean-Baptiste,
Comme cela avait été prophétisé.
Nova, nova.
Alors la jeune fille dit: «Vraiment,
Je suis votre servante, sur ma parole,
Me voici la servante du Seigneur.
Nova, nova.

who were guarding their flocks near Bethlehem,
which was heavy work. Eleison.
Christe. Likewise there left from the East three
very powerful kings, knowing that there was
a most noble king, and they came to Jerusalem. Eleison.
Christe. On arrival mere, they were informed
where Christ was born, and learning that
it was in Bethlehem, left promptly. Eleison.
Christe Eleison.
Kyrie. They followed the star
which guided them night and day from the moment they left
as far as the stable in Bethlehem, Eleison.
Kyrie. Having seen the infant
they worshipped him and offered their gifts of gold,
myrrh and frankincense, knowing him to be Almighty God.
Eleison.
Kyrie. Having done this,
and fearing the perfect traitor; Herod the tyrant,
they returned to their lands, Eleison.
Kyrie Eleison.

So much does Rassa grow, climb and rise,
She who is free from all deceit,
That her merit displeases other women;
There is none that would harm her,
he sight of her beauty binds men
To serve her, like it or not.
Those who best and truly know
Continue in her praise
And esteem her as most gentle,
For she keeps her honour so wholly
That she desires one suitor alone.
In Rassa I have a lady who is fresh and fine,
Loving, joyous, with blonde hair
Tinted with ruby red and her skin
As white as hawthorn blossom.
Soft-elbowed and firm-breasted;
Her back is like a rabbit's,
So fine and fresh is its colour.
Those who say that they know me
Can easily see that she is the best,
She whom I adore for her merits
And the praises sung of her.
Rassa is prideful towards the rich
And shows good sense; a true young woman
Who wishes for neither Poitiers nor Toulouse,
Neither Brittany nor Saragossa,
But who is so desirous of merit
That she loves a poor gallant knight,
For she has taken me as her master.
I beg her to hold her love dear
And to love a gallant vavasour
More than a count or deceitful duke
Who will bring her dishonour.
Rassa, a rich man who neither gives
Nor receives nor spends, nor makes music,
Who accuses falsely and does not
Forgive one who asks for pardon
Wearies me, as does someone
Who does not realise what is done for him.
Powerful men and hunters also weary me,
As do those who hunt with buzzards,
Mocking the flight of the goshawk,
For they will never speak either of arms
Or of love amongst themselves.
Rassa, I pray that this may please you:
A great lord who does not tire of war
And who does not give up, despite threats,
Until people have ceased doing him harm,
He is worth more than the river or the hunt
For he collects and gathers in at a good price.
Maurin and his lord Aigar are held
To be fine invaders;
Let the viscount defend his honour
And let the count ask this strongly of him,
And we shall soon see at Easter.
Sailor, you have honour
And we have exchanged a lord,
A fine warrior, for a jouster.
I hope that my song does not
Make Golfier de la Tor afraid.
Papiols, carry my song
To the court of my cruel but fine lord.
Rassa, tant croît, monte et s'élève
celle qui est dépourvue de toute fausseté
que son mérite ennuie les autres [ dames];
au noble mérite et aux louanges [qu'on fait d'elle];
ceux qui prétendent me connaître,
ni Poitiers, ni Toulouse, ni Bretagne, ni Sarragosse,
puisqu'elle m'a pris pour maître;
Papiols, fais parvenir mon chant

Es breugt ein schönen last
Darauff viel Engel scharen
und hat ein grossen Mast.
Das Schiff kompt uns geladen
Gott Vatter hats gesandt
Es bringt uns grossen staden
lesum unsern Heilandt.
Das Schiff kompt uns geflossen
Das Schifflein geht am Landt
Hat Himmel auffgeschlossen
Den Sohn herauß gesandt
Maria hat geboren
Auß jhrem Fleisch vnd Blut
Das Kindlein außerkoren
Wahr Mensch und waren Gott
--------------------------------------------
There comes a ship a-sailing
She bears a beautiful cargo
Many angels fly above
And she has a mighty mast.
The ship comes to us fully laden
God our Father has sent her
She brings us a great blessing,
Christ our Redeemer.
The ship comes to rescue us
The little boat moves into shore
The Heavens have opened up
His Son has disembarked.
Mary has begotten
From her own flesh and blood
The little child elected
True man and true God.
-----------------------------------
Voici venir un navire sous voiles
Il porte une cargaison merveilleuse,
Des anges voltigent autour de lui,
Son mât est haut et puissant.
Le navire vient à nous bien chargé,
Dieu le Père nous l'a envoyé,
Il nous apporte une grâce immense,
Le Christ, notre Rédempteur.
Le navire vient pour nous sauver,
Le petit bateau vient toucher terre,
Les cieux se sont ouverts,
Son Fils descend sur le rivage.
Marie a engendré
I love this interpretation because it is close to people gathering to sing a Christmas carol.

Riu riu chiu, the river bank protects it
God has kept our Lamb from the Wolf.
The rabid Wolf wanted to bite her
But Almighty God knew how to defend her
He decided to make Her impervious to sin
Even original sin this Virgin did not have.
This one who is born is the great Monarch,
Christ the Patriarch dressed in human flesh;
He has redeemed us by making Himself small.
Although infinite, He made Himself finite.
Many prophets gave us prophecies and forecasts,
So today in our time they have come true at long last.
God in human form, this is what we see on earth,
And mankind in Heaven because God wants it so.
I saw a thousand angels that were singing,
Flying around, making a thousand voices,
Telling the shepherds: Glory be in Heaven
And Peace on Earth since Jesus is born.
He comes to give life to those who were dead
He comes to repair the fall of humankind.
This Child is the light of day,
He is the Lamb of whom St John the Baptist had spoken
Know that the story makes sense, just as we shall hear it
That God could not make Her more than his mother.
He who was her father was born of her today,
He who created her proclaimed he was her son.
Now that we have what we had desired
Let us go together to present Him our gifts.
Let everyone give Him what they want,
Because He came to make Himself equal to us.
------------------------------------------
Christ le Patriarche, qui s'est incarné en homme;

Comment pourra s'accomplir telle affaire?
Neuf moys seras enceinte de cet enfant;
Car il a eu egard à son ancelle;

A young Maid with a noble heart,
praying to her Creator in her chamber.
The angel, descending from heaven to earth,
told her the mystery of our Saviour.
The Maid, astonished at this voice,
was moved to say at this point:
'How can such a thing be accomplished?
For never did I have converse with any man at all.'
'Fear not, Mary, at all:
he who is Lord of the firmament will send you his Holy Spirit,
from whom you will soon learn of the Child to be born.
Without sorrow, without pain, without torment,
you will carry this Child for nine months;
when the time comes to give him birth,
you must call him Jesus,
the King triumphing over all things.'
Then she was so consoled by these fine words,
that she felt as though she were in Paradise.
She submitted entirely to comply with all he said,
saying 'Here is the handmaid of the Saviour Jesus Christ.
My soul glorifies God my Saviour,
my spirit praises its Creator,
for he has looked upon his handmaiden;
may the whole earth be glory and honour to him.'

New star which has appeared newly among humankind.
Star that appeared to the world when our delightful king was born
He stood in the midst of the world to give light to the people.
The three wise men had seen it and immediately recognized it ;
Saying: “Our salvation is born, God the Father Almighty“.
Every one of them with his kingdom set off to follow the star
With rich presents, to give him praise, which was most charming.
And then Herod told them that he wanted them to find out
Where this Messiah was born and then come back to let him know.
They said: “Born is a king most sweet, who will reign over all the kingdoms;
A sign has appeared in the sky, showing that he is really born.

"Tan m'abelis joys et amors et chans"
Joy and love, song and happiness,
Amusement and courtesy please me so
That there is no wealth in this world
That could make me more fortunate.
I know well that my lady holds the keys
To every delight that I await in hope,
And that without her I will have nothing.
Her great merit and modest demeanour,
Her gentle speech and fair company
Have always made me wish to be her lord,
More than any other seen before or since.
If her loving and sweet heart
Deigns not to hold me in her favour,
No other love will ever give me pleasure.
So much have I wished her well
And desired her and her company,
That my heart would be unable to leave her
If I decided to take my leave.
I have stated her honour, virtue and glory
And will never be called a liar
For her merits are the proof of my honesty.
Fair lady, courteous and accomplished,
Sensible, without stain or folly,
Although I do not see you as often as I wish,
My thoughts assuage my desire,
For there is my delight, ease and repose;
When my eyes are unable to see you,
By night and day I see you in my thoughts.
Do you know why I do not turn away or hesitate
To love you, my fair and sweet friend?
For if I had you, I would not be afraid
That you were blending falsehood and deceit;
I would prefer - I hardly dare imagine it –
That one day you were mine, rather than
Kiss, embrace or hold another woman.
If I ever find myself in your embrace
And that we both desire it,
I wonder how I could contain my joy.
---------------------------------------
Joie et amour, chant et allégresse,
divertissement et courtoisie me plaisent tant
qui me feraient me sentir encore plus fortuné;
plus que celle d'aucune autre que j'ai vue ensuite ou avant;
Belle dame, courtoise, accomplie,
que vous mêliez fausseté et tromperie à notre amour;

O manna vital
Che l'alme nutrisci le rendi immortal
Deh ! vieni nel petto
Deh ! purga l'affetto
Da' mie vanita
Che viver non voglio che all' eternita.
O laccio d'amor
Che stringi col servo l'amato Signor
Di te son, ben mio
Te solo vogl'io
Mai d'altri saro
Piutosto di vita penando usciro.
O dolce Giesu
Mia gioia, mia vita, mio cibo sei tu :
lo vivo non io
Ma vive in me Dio
Che vita mi da
E come suo figlio glorioso mi fa.
Mia speme sei tu
Eterni Signore
Tuo sempre saro
Te stesso m'hai dato me stesso ti do.

O Bread of heaven,
living comfort of a faithful soul!
You are the pledge of love,
You are the pledge of glory,
And the mystery of faith.
There is no sweeter food in heaven.
O life giving manna
That nourishes the soul and makes it immortal,
Ah, come to my bosom,
Ah, purge the source
Of my vanities,
For I want to live only in eternity.
O bond of love
That chains the slave to his beloved Lord,
I am yours, my treasure,
And I want only you:
I will never belong to any other,
But would rather quit this life amid torments.
O gentle Jesus,
You are rny joy, rny life, rny food:
I myself do not live,
It is God who lives in me,
Who gives me life
And makes me glorious like his son.
You are rny hope,
You who gave your life on the Cross for me,
I give you my heart,
Eternal Lord
I will always be yours;
You gave yourself to me and I give myself to you.

Tu es ma joie, ma vie, tu es ma nourriture

Young beauty, never was I possessed of love s virtue,
but thou, sovereign saviour,
hast this heart of mine, thy servant, endowed with it.
When first in your eyes mine were mirrored,
I saw Love in them, and in purity towards him went,
unmindful of the power of the gods; I stood like a small child,
then, searching within my breast, the golden arrow therein I found.
Young beauty, never was I possessed of love s virtue,

la flèche dorée dedans y trouvai.

Potens in terra erit semen eius
generatio rectorum benedicetur.
Gloria et divitiæ in domo eius

Gloria Patri et Filio
et Spiritui Sancto.
Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper
et in sæcula sæculorum. Amen.

Hungary rejoices, Thuringia jubilates!
For today they were given the pledge of peace and joy in the church.
Psalm 111 (112):
Blessed is the man who fears the Lord,
who greatly delights in his commandments.
His seed shall be mighty on the earth,
the generation of the upright shall be blessed.
Wealth and riches shall be in his house,
and his righteousness endures forever.
To the upright, light dawns in the darkness,
he is gracious, merciful, and righteous.
Happy the man who deals generously and lends,
who conducts his affairs with justice,
for he shall never waver.
The righteous shall be held in eternal remembrance,
he will not be afraid of evil tidings.
His heart is firm, trusting in the Lord,
his heart is certain, he shall not waver
until he can look down upon his adversaries.
He has dispersed, he has given to the poor,
his righteousness endures forever,
his horn will be exalted in honor.
The wicked shall see it and be angry,
shall gnash with his teeth and melt away,
the desire of the wicked shall perish.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now,
and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

il ne craint point le mauvais jugement;
il grincera des dents et il mourra;
Amen.

Interprets' comments:
“Mont sont il a meechief mis” is a complaint narrating tile agony of 13 Jewish men, women and children condemned to burn by the Inquisition in the city of Troyes in 1288. This traumatic event led to the composition of three Hebrew elegies in memory of the victims. The one presented here is the most famous and the only one translated into langue d'oïl. All three are found in the same manuscript, “Vatican ebreo 322”. Transcribing langue d'oïl from Hebrew characters presented numerous challanges, and we have here followed the version suggested by the philologist Arselle Darmesteter.
English translation:
Israel, the abandoned people, is suffering great hardship, / They cannot help it if they are all enraged; / For many fine bodies and souls among them were burned, / Who in exchange for their lives did not want to give even a penny of ransom.
Our joy and pleasure are troubled / By those who studied Torah and had it in their safe-keeping. / They did not stop studying the law by day or by night. / Now they are burned and dead, each one has already recognized the true God.
To the square was led Rabbi Isaac Châtelain, / Who for God left income and houses there and then. / This man who was rich in all things gave himsell to the living God; / He was a good teacher of Tosafot and plain commentary.
When the good wife saw her husband burn / The separation was very hard for her, so she uttered a loud cry. / She said: "I am going to die such a death, as my beloved one died." / She was big with child; for this reason she suffered great pain.
Two brothers were burned there, one a child, one grown. / The little one was terrified of the pyre that was catching fire / And he said: "Help! I am burning up!" And his older brother instructed him / And said to him, "You will soon be in Paradise, I promise you."
They came to preach to the daughter-in-law I who was so beautiful, / "We will give you a rich squire who will hold you most dear." / She at once began to spit at them: / "I will not give up the living God, therefore you could flay me alive.
With one voice, all together, they sang loud and clear. / They might have been merrymakers who should perform the carole, but in vain: / Their hands were bound so that they could not dance it. Never did a group of people come so joyfully out into the open air.
Like a bridgegroom he was quickly brought to the fire. / He took great pains to make his beautiful death./ At once he strengthened the others: how fortunate that he was born! / His name was Rabbi Samson the Son-in-Law and the Eastern/Ancient One.
Afterwards came Rabbi Solomon who was highly esteemed. / And he was thrown into the fire which was all aflame. / He did not hold back from offering his body to God: / He suffered death for love of him; to do so gave him much joy.
The evildoer, the cursed one, he was filled with / poisonous desire / To bum one after the other. Adon the Holy said to him, I "Make a big fire, evil man" and he became emboldened to reproach him. / Of great beauty was his end, like that of a man intoxicated, Dan Bandit.
Friars came entreating Rabbi lsaac Cohen : / He could convert to their faith; if not, he would have to die. / He said: "Why are you so dismayed? I want to die for God." / "I am a Cohen. And you want to offer my body as a sacrifice!"
"You will scarcely escape, for we have you,” / Said the bailiff, "Become a Christian." And at once he answered "No.' / For their path I will not give up the living God or his holy name. / They called him Rabbi Hayyim, the brother-in-law of the Rabbi of Brinon.
God will punish and take vengeance upon these evil-doers for these things! / The day seems very long to us as we wait for your revenge, / And as we pray to you with whole heart, where we are born and where we go./ We are ready and prepared. Answer, Lord, when we call you!

Glorious Virgin Mary,
because I love to serve you
and have favoured you,
I will make a new song
about me begging your assistance
having fallen on evil ways.
For I will pay dearly for my sins when
I am called for judgement unless you can plead for me.
Never has anyone who laughs,
or can youth be any more assured,
because ignorance is no reason for
forgiveness for sins committed lightly.
There all must reveal their lives.
Oh, noble and mighty Lady!
Be a cover and a coat for me
who is so quick to sin and has made
my soul a prisoner out of vanity.
Gentle Virgin, raised in glory,
fountain and stream of gentleness,
queen, of royal lineage.
Remember those who serve you,
that the treacherous foe may not be lord and master.
For he has many poisonous darts to rob the lives of our people.
Pride has laid the clergy low and
gained a great hold on the Dominicans
so that they are ruled by greed,
but the Cistercians have been spared,
the monks and abbots are plagued
by envy and the knights by robbery;
it leads us in great numbers
and has made things worse and worse
in preaching excess for all.
Pray kindly to your son
who tends his lambs like a good shepherd;
He will listen to you, his vassal, I am sure.
Those who have vexed you
and who regret their folly must be a burden to you.
Be for them a fortress and a refuge when the foe attacks.
