#RVLife #FullTimeRV #RVBudget #ChasingOurSunshineAre We TOO YOUNG For The Villages Florida? (Full Tour)Chasing Our Sunshine2026-03-08 | We explored The Villages Florida and asked the question: What IS The Villages Florida? Are we too young? Is The Villages Florida the right retirement community for us? In this complete tour and investigation of The Villages Florida experience, we explore the lifestyle, amenities, and ask the real questions about whether this retirement community could be part of our next chapter as we continue chasing our sunshine.
📍 TIMESTAMPS: 0:00 - Welcome & The Big Question 2:19 - Complete Tour of The Villages 8:31 - The Real Talk: Pros & Cons 11:48 - Final Thoughts & Reflection
🎥 IN THIS VIDEO: ✓ Complete tour of The Villages via golf cart ✓ Adult pools, family pools, and rec centers with games ✓ Model homes and what daily life actually looks like ✓ Exploring Brownwood and Lake Sumter town squares ✓ Live music every single day (365 days a year!) ✓ Happy hour spots and local restaurants ✓ Meeting residents and other retired law enforcement ✓ The age question—are we really too young? ✓ Our honest thoughts about whether this community is right for us ✓ How this fits into our journey of transitioning from full-time RV living
💡 IF YOU'VE BEEN FOLLOWING US, YOU KNOW: We've already announced we're buying a house and transitioning out of full-time RV life. But the big question is: Is it in The Villages? Is this right for us? Would it be right for you?
After exploring everything The Villages has to offer—the community, the activities, the maintenance-free lifestyle—we can see the appeal. But we also need to think carefully about whether this is our next chapter or if we're meant for something different.
🏡 THE VILLAGES FLORIDA BY THE NUMBERS: ✓ 150,000+ residents across three counties ✓ Retirement community with 55+ age requirement in most areas ✓ Golf carts as primary mode of transportation ✓ Championship golf courses and recreational activities ✓ Multiple town squares (we visited Brownwood and Lake Sumter) ✓ Live music every single day at town squares ✓ Maintenance-free living with community-managed amenities ✓ Active lifestyle focused on social engagement ✓ Climate-controlled mailbox centers throughout the community
❓ KEY QUESTIONS WE EXPLORE: - What is The Villages really like day-to-day? - Is it really just for "old people"? - How much does it actually cost? - What are the pros and cons? - Could this work for someone transitioning from RV life? - Is this the right choice for us (and maybe for you)?

Thanks for exploring The Villages Florida with us. If you've been following us, you already know we've decided to come off the road and buy a house. But the big question is: Is it in The Villages? Is it right for us? Would it be right for you? After exploring everything The Villages has to offer—the community, the activities, the maintenance-free lifestyle—we can definitely see the appeal. But we decided we needed to sit on this and head to the Florida Keys to decompress, reflect, and figure out if The Villages is our next chapter or if we're meant for something different.
One thing we know for sure is we are still chasing our sunshine, and we're doing it intentionally.

Harbor Grill Homer 🦞 #AlaskaTravelChasing Our Sunshine2025-10-23 | Harbor Grill in Homer, Alaska served us the best seafood we had during our entire Alaska RV adventure! 🦞🐟
It was raining when we were there, so we didn't get the famous harbor views everyone talks about. But the food? Absolutely incredible.
We ordered the Tour of Alaska - fresh halibut, salmon, shrimp, and scallops. We split one entree and it was still plenty of food. The quality and freshness were outstanding.
Harbor Grill isn't cheap - this is fine dining in Alaska. But if you're looking for the best local seafood prepared perfectly, this is THE spot in Homer. Budget tip: Split an entree! Still amazing, saves money.

We're Joel and Deb from Chasing Our Sunshine, and this week we're taking you to Homer, Alaska - the town at the very end of the road on the Kenai Peninsula. Fellow RVers told us to skip Homer. They were wrong. We'll show you budget-friendly camping, incredible local food, and why Homer became one of our most meaningful stops in Alaska.
But this video is different. Between Seward and Homer, our dog Maya was suddenly paralyzed in her back legs in Soldotna. We faced impossible decisions, carried her with towels for days, and didn't know if she'd ever walk again. Homer gave us the time, space, and hope we desperately needed.
Three months later, Maya is at 98% recovery. This is her story - the fear, the choices, the conservative treatment that worked, and how Homer helped all of us heal.
🏕️ HOMER ELKS LODGE: $35/night (Elks members only) ✅ 8 electric-only sites, first come first served ✅ Best views we've seen at any Elks Lodge ✅ Quiet, peaceful, perfect for Maya's recovery ⚠️ Must be Elks members to stay
🍽️ HARBOR GRILL: Best seafood in Alaska - Tour of Alaska (halibut, salmon, shrimp, scallops) - Split an entree to save money - Not cheap, but worth every penny
🍺 SALTY DAWG SALOON: Homer's iconic landmark - Building dates to 1897, bar since 1957 - Dollar bills covering every wall - Most authentic dive bar in Alaska - Absolute must-visit
🍻 GRACE RIDGE BREWERY: Local favorite - Family-owned, beer brewed on-site - PikaPika Bento food truck (Japanese/Vietnamese) - Locals' recommendation - they were right!
🐕 MAYA'S STORY (July 9-16, 2025): - July 9: Paralyzed while playing fetch in Soldotna - Diagnosis: Possible spinal stroke or blown disc - Choice: $10K-$20K surgery + 2-month recovery in Anchorage OR conservative treatment - Vet bill: $750 (exam, meds, steroids, muscle relaxers) - Treatment: Medications, physical therapy, towel support, hope - July 13-16: Recovery in Homer - October 2025: Maya at 98% recovery - Chiropractic vet in Wisconsin helped even more
**Medical note:** We chose conservative treatment (muscle relaxers, steroids, physical therapy) without knowing if it was a spinal stroke or blown disc (MRI would have required expensive imaging in Anchorage). Every pet situation is different - work with your vet to determine the best path for your animal. We're sharing our experience and the difficult financial/medical choices we faced, not providing veterinary advice.

Welcome sunshine chasers! This week we tackle what many call Alaska's worst road to reach McCarthy - population 107 - Alaska's last true frontier town. Our Uncle George, who's lived there since 1994, warned us: "Don't bring your RV down that road!" So we left our rigs behind and hitched a ride with friends to experience this incredible remote destination.
What You Need to Know About McCarthy Road:
**The Drive:** - 60 miles of gravel road from Chitina - 3 hours 45 minutes with stops (one way) - Watch for potholes, washboard sections, and railroad spikes! - Famous Kuskulana Bridge at Mile 17 (525 feet long, 238 feet above river)
**RV Warning:** Leave your RV behind! This road is NOT recommended for RVs. Take a sturdy vehicle instead.
**Our Experience:** Uncle George (National Weather Service veteran, McCarthy resident since 1994) gave us the ultimate insider tour of this frontier town. We explored the Kennecott Mines National Historic Landmark, visited the Golden Saloon made famous by "Edge of Alaska," and discovered why 107 hardy souls choose to live at the end of Alaska's most challenging road.
**Tips for Your Visit:** - Plan a full day (6-7 hours round trip driving) - Bring snacks, water, and possibly a spare tire - Check the cruise ship schedule if visiting from Valdez - Most visitors park and walk across footbridge to McCarthy - Shuttle available from McCarthy to Kennecott ($5 one way)
**Next Episode:** Whittier, Alaska - another unique travel challenge you won't believe!

Join us on the most intense part of our Alaska Highway adventure as we race against time, wildfires, and road closures in our 1999 Minnie Winnie.
Starting in Jasper (where gas was $3.49/gallon vs $2.89 in Wisconsin!), we pushed 311 miles in 8 hours to beat incoming 60 mph winds and active wildfire zones. Using DriveBC.ca's smoke forecast maps, we found our last safe overnight spot before attempting the legendary Alaska Highway fire zones.
What we didn't know? The highway would close completely just 24 hours after we made it through.

After spending our first peaceful night at a beautiful campground (with some interesting campground etiquette differences!), we headed to Calgary to meet up with our fellow Rubber Chicken Gang members for epic boondocking in our Minnie Winnie.
In this episode, we explore everything Calgary has to offer - from the iconic Peter's Drive-In (a true Calgary classic since 1962!) to wandering through the vibrant downtown core. We got to see the stunning Wonderland sculpture and walk across the famous Peace Bridge. Plus, we tackled some unexpected RV maintenance and joined the Rubber Chicken Gang with our new mascot, Sergeant Stir Fry!
And yes, we share our slightly embarrassing Costco checkout experience that taught us about Canadian payment systems the hard way. Pro tip: Costco Canada only takes Mastercard! 😅

Fried Wiring & RV Fire Hazard (DIY Fix)Chasing Our Sunshine2025-04-13 | Why is RV Water Heater Not Working? We discovered our RV water heater not working on electric (but fine on propane) after 3 1/2 years of full-time RV Living. Little did we know, we were sitting on a FIRE HAZARD! The burnt wires we found could have been catastrophic and brought the end to RV life as we know it.
In this video, we show you: ✅ How to diagnose when your RV water heater isn't working properly ✅ Step-by-step replacement of both the heating element AND electric thermostat ✅ How to identify dangerous wiring issues before they cause a fire ✅ Tips for testing and maintenance to prevent future problems
Even as non-DIYers, we fixed this ourselves and saved hundreds of dollars on service calls. This repair took less than an hour and only required basic tools. If we can do it, you definitely can too!
🔥 SAFETY WARNING: If your RV water heater works on propane but not electric, don't ignore it - check for burnt wiring immediately!
⏱️ VIDEO TIMESTAMPS: 00:00 The cold shower problem 01:45 Discovering the burnt wires 03:34 Safety precautions before starting 04:17 Tools needed 04:30 Replacing the heating element 07:32 Anode Rod tips 08:32 Still not working - thermostat replacement 11:15 Identifying and fixing the wire rubbing issue 12:00 Final testing and success!
Our RV is equipped with a Suburban 10-gallon RV water heater, which is common in many motorhomes and travel trailers. This repair process should work for most Suburban water heater models, though your specific configuration might vary slightly. We've found that these Suburban units are generally reliable, but after several years of full-time use, components like the electric heating element and thermostat can fail. The wiring issue we discovered could happen in any RV water heater installation, so it's worth checking yours even if you have a different brand or model. Regular maintenance is key to preventing these potentially dangerous failures.

As former police officers, we share the emergency safety plan that kept us safe when our engine derated without warning.
What Really Happened: We first noticed trouble in Montana with a check engine light while driving through the mountains. Despite getting it checked at Floyd's Truck Center in Belgrade (where they diagnosed an intake manifold pressure sensor issue), the problem persisted as we entered Yellowstone. Fast forward our travels from Wyoming to Colorado down to New Mexico, to the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta and as we leave Albuquerque on 1-40 is when disaster struck - our RV suddenly derated, slowing us down to 30 mph and forcing us to pull over on the interstate.
In This Video:
- See our real reaction when we got stranded on I-40 with nowhere to go - Learn why we couldn't make it just 3 miles to the next exit - Watch how we deployed emergency cones and safety equipment - Understand why staying on the right side of your RV is crucial for safety - Experience the frustration of waiting hours for mobile repair - Find out how we managed to entertain ourselves during the 5+ hour wait - Discover what caused our engine problem (forced regen needed) - See how we finally made it to the Route 66 Casino RV Park just 4 miles away
Key Safety Tips We Cover:
⚠️ Proper placement of safety triangles and cones ✅ Why passenger side exit is safest during roadside emergencies ⭐️ Importance of roadside assistance programs (we used Escapees RV Club) 📞 How to communicate effectively with mobile repair services 🚐 What to do when your RV enters "limp mode" ‼️ Staying calm during extended roadside emergencies ☑️ Planning for unexpected overnight stays
Having responded to countless highway emergencies as former police officers, we know firsthand how dangerous roadside breakdowns can be. Even with our background, this situation tested our patience and safety protocols. Total cost breakdown:
Mobile repair service: ~$400 out of pocket ( RV Tech miles covered by roadside assistance) Emergency overnight at casino RV park: $102 with Good Sam discount
