This leitmotif is first heard in act 1 scene 1 of Siegfried.

This tune is used as Mime makes his complaint: "Das ist nun der Liebe......mich qualt und hasst!". Here he describes all the things he did for Siegfried as he was growing up to tend and care for him, and his reward ias a quick-tempered boy who torments and abhors him.
