Month 5 in the Northern Tool Legends Build is a full-on reality check. Kyle Petty takes us back to LaVergne High School in Tennessee where the question is simple: can this student build team turn real progress into a finished flat track race bike before the June 6 Sons of Speed Nashville Short Track debut?
After last month’s visit, the pressure is on and the clock is winning. The team has been pushing hard on major pieces like the swingarm, fuel tank templates, seat bracket, foot peg mounts, and getting the radiator in, but the 2025 Harley-Davidson Nightster’s electronics are proving to be a serious hurdle, even for legends like Billy Lane.
Flat Track legend Chris Carr joins Billy and the students in the shop and the energy shifts fast, but the to-do list is still long: peg placement, shock tabs, exhaust subframe, battery placement, fuel sending solutions, rear brakes, shift linkage, and finishing welds. The reality is the build team has made good progress but they're still running out of time.
Next month, the motorcycle dream team arrives: Bubba Boswell, Hammer from Hooligan Racing, eBay Jake, Detroit Randy, Dave Perewitz, and Berry Wardlaw. And if this group, paired with the build team, can’t get this bike fired up…Well…Then we’ve got a real problem.
