The 2024 BMW X6 is essentially a BMW X5 with a sloping rear roofline. This gives it a sportier silhouette, but in the process, it sacrifices one of the main traits of an SUV: practicality. The lower roof reduces rear passenger space and cargo capacity, and yet BMW charges more for the X6 than the more practical X5.We didn't have much confidence the X6 would catch on when it was introduced in 2008, but here we are 16 years later. It was last redesigned in 2020, and the 2024 model year brings a host of changes. The exterior receives a very subtle styling update, but bigger changes have been made underneath the skin. The engines now feature mild-hybrid systems for improved efficiency, while a new infotainment system and curved display debut inside the cabin, along with a hands-free highway driving system.Not only has the BMW X6 survived, but it has also motivated rival carmakers to create their own sporty SUVs. The Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe and Audi Q8 follow BMW's example of chopping off a section of the roof for a fastback-like tail. Not surprisingly, these coupe conversions contend with the same space compromises. While we may deride these SUV coupes for costing more and providing less utility, we also applaud them for giving drivers a sportier alternative. At least there's a choice for performance-minded shoppers who may not need quite as much space.
