The definitions of zero, negative, and fractional powers are chosen so that the laws of exponents remain consistent. But that still leaves a deeper question: what does it actually mean to raise something to a power that isn’t a whole number? In this video, I give a more conceptual explanation of exponentiation by thinking in terms of multiplicative power — the ability of a number to affect other numbers through multiplication. From this point of view, the definitions of x⁰, x⁻¹, and x to the 1/2 power are not arbitrary rules, but natural consequences of the structure of multiplication.
