In algebra, we learn the rules of exponents, but the usual explanation often feels procedural. The definitions of zero, negative, and fractional powers are chosen so that the laws of exponents remain consistent. But that still leaves a deeper question: what does it actually mean to raise something to a power that isn’t a whole number?
In this video, I give a more conceptual explanation of exponentiation by thinking in terms of multiplicative power — the ability of a number to affect other numbers through multiplication. From this point of view, the definitions of x⁰, x⁻¹, and x to the 1/2 power are not arbitrary rules, but natural consequences of the structure of multiplication.
