With people staying home more during the pandemic, and fewer options for dining out or takeout, it is especially important to be aware of safe cooking practices at home to prevent fires and fire injuries.
Cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries. Meredith Hawes from NFPA® shares the 7 easy steps for helping prevent home cooking fires. They include:
• Be alert when cooking. Don’t cook if you are drowsy or distracted.
• Have your oven mitts and pan lids nearby in case there is a grease fire.
• Establish a kid- and pet-free zone around the cooking area.
• Keep flammable materials away from the stove while cooking.
• And more
Cooking can be an enjoyable activity, but it can also lead to fire hazards when precautions are not followed.
