“Lead the Army with discipline and integrity. Uphold the Constitution. Protect the trust of the Filipino people,” President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. told incoming Philippine Army (PA) Commanding General Lieutenant General Donald Gumiran during the 68th Philippine Army Change of Command Ceremony at Fort Andres Bonifacio in Taguig City on August 11, 2026.
In his remarks, the President commended General Antonio Nafarrete, the outgoing PA Commanding General, for his leadership and highlighted the Army’s strengthened readiness for internal and external security, continued modernization and reserve force development, deeper cooperation with local and international partners, and expanded programs for troop welfare and mental health throughout his tenure.
He expressed confidence in Lt. Gen. Gumiran’s extensive frontline command experience, noting that it has prepared him to lead the Philippine Army. He urged the incoming Commanding General to “continue the mission, preserve the Army’s strong sense of duty and keep faith with our soldiers.” He emphasized that the public must always be assured that the Army is ready to serve its countrymen, especially now as Filipinos continue to face heavy monsoon rains and other calamities, and that it is ready to bring them to safety and help deliver food and other essential supplies, especially to isolated communities.
Concluding his remarks, the Commander-in-Chief expressed his appreciation to the men and women of the Philippine Army for their dedication and sacrifice. He recognized the challenges they face, including being away from their families and putting themselves in dangerous situations, all in service to the Filipino people. He assured them that the Administration will continue to invest in their capabilities and champion initiatives that safeguard their welfare and that of their families.
