Modern physics has uncovered a major clue: the constants of nature are exquisitely fine-tuned for the existence of a structured, complex universe. Many scientists hope to explain the values of the constants by necessity: Either saying "That's just the way it is" or positing a deeper mathematical law that determines the numbers. Both solutions face a problem with fine-tuning that essentially renders them completely invalid.
