Fine-tuning of the constants reinserts teleology into our understanding of nature and gives us an objective basis for grounding our notion of purpose. Teleology was once an essential part of explaining nature. However, modern science eliminated it almost entirely (which has had major negative psychological and social consequences), yet made great strides in explaining the universe with only efficient causes.
In this episode, we also discuss the common mistake many people make by saying the fine-tuning argument from physics for an intelligent cause is God-of-the-Gaps. There are three characteristics of the God-of-the-Gaps fallacy and all three do not apply to the argument from the fine-tuning of the constants. You'll first need to understand the difference between efficient and teleological causes and why they're vital for interpreting fine-tuning. All this ultimately demonstrates the validity of the science-based philosophical argument that the values of the constants were chosen by an intelligent cause for the purpose of bringing about a complex universe with atoms, molecules, stars, planets, and life.
