periwinkle | (5:03.883) Super Mario Bros. Any% speedrun @periwinkle. | Uploaded July 2020 | Updated October 2024, 2 hours ago.
Personal best from 2020/07/09 to 2020/08/05.
Most people start out going small-only but I wanted to demonstrate that one can get a pretty decent time with fire strats without too much effort. And indeed, I got a 5:04.399 fairly quickly (on attempt #95), and then decided to push for 5:03. That ended up taking a bit more effort than I had originally anticipated, but I stuck through with it and this is the result.
Possible time saves with this powerup route (without adding hard tricks) include an extra framerule in both 1-1 and 1-2 (through faster powerup grabs), and then you could go for the frame-perfect walljump in 8-4 to get a 5:02. Those are all pretty hard timesaves, though, so I'm not going to bother with that and instead just ditch the powerups altogether and go for 4:58.5 as small Mario (which will probably be easier for me anyhow).
Here's the Twitch VOD of this run that has my commentary: twitch.tv/videos/675083909
Here's a link to the autosplitter that I used for my splits: github.com/periwinkle3125/smb-autosplitter
