Satellite imagery is a powerful scientific tool, helping experts track weather patterns, map urban growth, and more. But making sense of it isn’t always easy. Here are 5 tips to help you understand what satellites see!

![NASA Experiment to Track Space ‘Doughnut’ Encircling Earth
NASA is launching a new experiment to track charged particles in a space doughnut that encircles our planet.
Installed on the exterior of the International Space Station, the new experiment will study the ring current — a doughnut-shaped swarm of particles that can surge when a solar blast hits Earth, disrupting our satellites in space and power systems on the ground.
The new experiment, called STORIE (Storm Time O+ Ring current Imaging Evolution), will study how particles enter and exit the ring current, helping us better protect our society from the threat of solar storms.

![Vine by Vine - Conserving Water With Landsat
How do you measure exactly how much water every vine needs across thousands of acres? For E. & J. Gallo Winery, the answer came from 438 miles up — Landsats thermal sensors measure surface temperature, revealing how much water crops are actually using. That data powered GRAPEX, a Gallo–USDA partnership that mapped water use vine row by vine row, and helped lay the groundwork for OpenET, a free platform now serving water data across all 48 contiguous states.

![Far and Wide Part 1: Differences
The James Webb Space Telescope, which is actively observing the universe from a million miles away, and the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, set to launch in 2026, are NASAs two latest flagship astrophysics observatories. Although both are studying myriad cosmic objects to answer fundamental questions about our universe, they have very different designs and capabilities. The universe is such a vast and complex place that it takes many telescopes with different abilities to thoroughly study it. This four-part video series explores the differences and synergies of Roman and Webb.
Webb’s giant mirror, ultracold instruments and infrared vision help it observe the farthest observable reaches of the cosmos. Using its narrow field of view, it can measure distant galaxies and planets outside our solar system with unprecedented detail.
Roman has a large field of view and will capture giant, 300-megapixel images, enabling it to survey the sky 1,000 times faster than the Hubble Space Telescope can while maintaining resolution similar to Hubble’s. Roman will also observe regions repeatedly over time, allowing astronomers to see changes and detect transient events like exploding stars and the movement of planets near the center of our galaxy.

![NASA’S PUNCH Mission
NASA’s Polarimeter to Unify the Corona and Heliosphere, or PUNCH mission, is a constellation of four small satellites in low Earth orbit that will make global, 3D observations of the Sun’s corona to better understand how the mass and energy there becomes the solar wind that fills the solar system.
Watch the video to learn how imaging the Sun’s corona and the solar wind together will help scientists better understand the entire inner heliosphere — Sun, solar wind, and Earth — as a single connected system.
