NASA’s Polarimeter to Unify the Corona and Heliosphere, or PUNCH mission, is a constellation of four small satellites in low Earth orbit that will make global, 3D observations of the Sun’s corona to better understand how the mass and energy there becomes the solar wind that fills the solar system.
Watch the video to learn how imaging the Sun’s corona and the solar wind together will help scientists better understand the entire inner heliosphere — Sun, solar wind, and Earth — as a single connected system.

![Artemis II: Into the Path of Solar Eruptions
For the first time in half a century, four astronauts are leaving Earth’s protective magnetic field. They’ll enter a realm where massive solar eruptions can unleash more energy than a billion hydrogen bombs.
The Artemis II crew will fly through a dangerous environment, but they’re not going it alone. On the voyage, the astronauts and their Orion capsule are outfitted with radiation trackers as ground teams monitor solar eruptions 24/7. Here’s how NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are protecting explorers from the most powerful eruptions in the solar system. 🛡️

![Parker Solar Probe: Humanity’s Closest Encounter with the Sun
Controllers have confirmed NASA’s mission to “touch” the Sun survived its record-breaking closest approach to the solar surface on Dec. 24, 2024.
Breaking its previous record by flying just 3.8 million miles above the surface of the Sun, NASA’s Parker Solar Probe hurtled through the solar atmosphere at a blazing 430,000 miles per hour — faster than any human-made object has ever moved. A beacon tone received in the late evening hours of Dec. 26 confirmed the spacecraft had made it through the encounter safely and is operating normally.
This pass, the first of more to come at this distance, allows the spacecraft to conduct unrivaled scientific measurements with the potential to change our understanding of the Sun.

![Intense Solar Storm Shifts ESCAPADE Launch
NASA’s ESCAPADE mission launched on Nov. 13, 2025!
But it wasn’t without any hiccups — or maybe a series of violent burps? — from the Sun! ☀️🌬️
The launch of ESCAPADE, our next mission to Mars, was delayed by a day due to the most powerful geomagnetic storm of 2025. The storm was caused by multiple flares and eruptions known as coronal mass ejections heading toward Earth.
With the help of NASA satellites and models, the team could monitor when the storm subsided and by the following day, it was safe to launch.

![Planting an Artemis I Moon Tree
On Nov. 16, 2022, NASA launched the Artemis I test flight, sending an uncrewed Orion capsule beyond the Moon and back. On board were seeds from five species of trees, to be planted after returning to Earth. On Nov. 7, 2024, a seedling from the Artemis I flight was planted at the NASA Goddard Visitor Center by Artemis I Mission Manager Mike Sarafin, Artemis II Camera Lead Marie Henderson, Artemis III Project Scientist Noah Petro, Artemis IV Project Scientist Barbara Cohen, and others. In commemorating the event, Dr. Petro noted that planting a seedling is, like space exploration, an act of hope intended to bring fruit to future generations.

![Take a 360 Tour of COBEs Cosmic Baby Picture
View the entire sky with the microwave eyes of NASA’s COBE (Cosmic Background Explorer) satellite in this immersive video. COBE took the first baby picture of the universe, revealing slight temperature variations when the cosmos was just 380,000 years old. This image shows the entire sky using four years of observations by COBE’s Differential Microwave Radiometer. The central plane of our galaxy runs across the middle, and its center is marked by a white X. Red indicates hotter regions, blue colder. The fluctuations are extremely faint, varying by only 1 part in 100,000 from the average temperature. They represent density variations in the early universe thought to have given rise to the structures we see today. After stripping away foreground emission arising from dust, hot gas, and charged particles interacting with magnetic fields in our galaxy, COBE data revealed tiny variations in the temperature of the cosmic microwave background — the oldest light in the universe — for the first time.

![One Last Look at Romans Mirror
The primary mirror for NASAs Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has passed its final inspection. On May 20 and 21, engineers at NASAs Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., confirmed that no specks fell onto the mirrors during testing and that there are no defects in the coating or alignment. With this milestone complete, the primary mirror is ready for its next view: space.

![NASAs Illuminate: Weathering an Invisible Storm
In May 2024, the Sun launched multiple, powerful eruptions toward Earth, causing the largest geomagnetic storm in over 20 years. The solar storm was so intense, it knocked out many GPS and communication systems and even sparked auroras as far south as Mexico. This scientific visualization shows how the storm affected Earth’s magnetosphere in real time.
