I’m on vacation right now in Jersey, one of the channel islands just off the coast of France, but I wanted to just update you on my Pico VR and FitXR journey. I have been trying some new games, Breachers is pretty amazing, very much like a 3 on 3 versions of some of the more popular First person shooters where you play against real opponents online, which is very immersive.
But FItXR has still been massive in my Pico use, and i’m actually getting way better at the more complex routines in Combat and Box. I know I said I was going to try more variety in the routines, but these are pretty addictive.
Anyway, I promised you a numbered listicle because the internet has LOVED them forever. I considered using an AI voice, but they really annoy me.
5: Yes, we’re going in reverse order. Feels more climatic. The resolution of the displays. So for a device like this, the two displays, one for each eye has to fill your entire field of vision, so every pixel really does count. The Pico 4 has a pair of 2160x2160 panels, which is a fair few pixels than anything else close to it’s price point, and that price point, we’ll come to later. Also, the fact you’re looking at those displays through pancake lenses as opposed to the more common fresnel lenses, which can cause you to see the concentric rings during use and the unwanted light scattering known as “God rays”. No such issues with the pancake lenses in the Pico.
4: Light-weight & Comfortable. I was worried before I received Pico, as a VR newbie that the headset would be heavy, uncomfortable and fatiguing to wear. Not true. The Pico is compact and lightweight, and because the battery pack is built into the back of the strap, it’s also really well-balanced. I’ve removed it after VR sessions and had a moment of surprise because I’m in my lounge, as the headset is comfortable enough that you can forget you’re wearing it, and that’s a very, very good thing for the immersion.
3: Virtual Desktop - While I’m not focusing on software massively on this list, Pico’s library seems to be growing very fast, and the idea of using this for productivity in future is pretty awesome. Right now it’s basically a mirror of your desktop or laptop display within a virtual room, but if you’re in a messy environment, it can be very useful to remove distractions, but I can certainly imagine in future this could well be a massive feature of the headset. Also, it actually works with the Mac, even wirelessly which is a MASSIVE tick for me, as it’s overlooked in many devices. I like.
2: World-class Head Tracking. I’m not going to lie, I’d heard horror stories about nausia when using VR headsets. This has caused me zero problems, and the reason, I believe is the absolutely rock solid head tracking. The movement of the image is perfectly syncronised with your head movement, and paired with the 72-90hz refresh rate displays, I’ve had a very comfortable experience. Win.
And at Number 1: The Price. This headset, with the pair of controllers, charger, light shield etc is £349 here in the UK. Thats likely less than 10% of the price of the fruit company one that’s just been announced and not arrived yet. You can’t really knock that at all for the amount of tech you’re getting here. And there’s a bunch of free to use apps in the store, and those that arent are priced pretty competitively given the amount of development involved in this stuff. For £350, this is reasonable christmas present territory too… just bear that in mind.
