Apple Announces iPhone 15 Event: What to expect!
So we finally have our confirmation of the Apple Event, Apple has dropped the event invitations as expected for September 12th, and given that press are invited to be on site for the event and hands on time with the products after the presentation they had to give a couple of week for arranging travel and accomodation for the attendees.
Obviously, the iPhone 15 series. We’ll come to the iPhone 15 Pro in a moment, but for our base models this year, the 15 and 15 plus are also getting more changes than last year. Like, not a lot, but more.
We’re expecting a mild redesign to the frame with slightly more curved edges that SHOULD make the phone more comfortable in the 3% of people’s hands who don’t put a case on it from amazon within a day of buying it. The back of the base iPhone will aslo reportedly get the frosted glass that has until now been exclusive to the pro phones, and in the biggest change, the notch will finally be gone, replaced by the Dynamic Island across the full range. Oh, and the hole in the bottom of the phone for the cable will change shape a little too.
Onto the Pro iPhones, were also getting those new ports, but here it’s expected to be up to high speed thunderbolt, meaning MUCH faster transfers, possibly as high as 40gb/s. That means that those much bigger video files that the Pro iPhones are able to produce, ProRes video for example will finally be able to get off the phone in a reasonable length of time. I’m personally a massive fan of AirDrop, but not everyone’s on a Mac, and this wired connection could be even faster. Beyond that, the colours look to be grey, lighter grey, darker grey and grayish blue.
And I say “Bigger one” rather than Pro Max as there’s a decent chance that given the price increase and addition of a periscope zoom camera on the bigger model that it may be named iPhone 15 Ultra rather than Pro Max - that would make it easier for Apple to justify the bigger price, but lets be honest we all know what’s really going on here. The brain of the iPhone 15 Pro and potentially Ultra this year will be A17, which should be a huge upgrade over last year because of it’s move to the new 3nm process from 5nm last year. That’ll help with both performance and efficiency gains.
Next up will almost certainly be Apple Watch Series 9 - and Apple Watch Ultra 2. Both are expected to get one key upgrade, the chip inside. Apple Watch has used essentially the same processor since Series 6, just with a different number scribbled on there in the factory. The new chips will be much more modern and move from 7nm to 5nm according to reports, again offereing more performance and better efficiency. And if you’re thinking, well my watch is fast enough - remember these will be around for years to come, so there’s a good chance that more challenging features could be coming down the line. And better efficiency? we’ll happily take that in something with a pretty small battery inside.
Other than the chip and potentially new colours though, there’s little to get excited about. Seems like 2024 is more likely to be when we get our big changes with Watch 10.
There could also be an iPad mini, or an iPad, or an iPad Air possibly, but not much to go on here and they’d likely be basically just chip bumps. If iPad 11 does come though, hopefully Apple can force the price down and lay the home button on the still sold iPad 9th generation to rest. It served us well, but it’s day is done.
Oh, and of course we’re also expecting an M3 Mac event too, but that will be in October, so we have plenty of time to speculate on that. But what do you think about the range at this event, let me know with any questions down in the comments below. And now, your questions.

#icaveanswers happy belated iCaversary! Do you think Apple will add AV1 and other video encoders to M3, and will Apple make Mac Pro add-in cards again?

#icaveanswers follow on the the desktop question. I didn’t mean that Apple would do it, I meant that third party apps could be used via side loading to achieve a full desktop setup. Apple couldn’t stop it, then it works they may Sherlock the idea like sidecar

#icaveanswers So, since there’s no sign of an official touch screen Mac, what’s your thoughts on using the new Alogic Clarity Pro Touch monitor with a Mac mini to achieve similar results? Also, it’s getting time to replace my 2016 MacBook Pro (15-inch 2.6 GHz i7, 16GB,1TB). What would be a good upgrade? M1 MacBook Pro 14 inch? The new 15 inch MacBook? Currently used for video/audio work of a not too intense nature.
