In this One Minute PCB Design Review, Tech Consultant Zach Peterson walks through a battery management system (BMS) communication PCB and pinpoints five quick fixes that make the board cleaner, more manufacturable, and far less likely to trip up a fabricator. Zach reviews unnecessary thermal reliefs applied to vias, explains why they're redundant when SMD pads on the copper pour already carry them, and shows how a stray top designator layer got misclassified as copper in his CAM tool and generated floating copper errors.

From there, Zach reviews the board edge clearance and recommends an 8 to 10 mil copper pullback to keep the pour off the rout line, flags drill hits spaced too closely together that would create a hole-wall to hole-wall distance violation, and corrects an oversized solder mask expansion on the vias that was starving the SMD pads of the expansion they actually need. It's a fast, practical look at the manufacturing details that separate a good BMS layout from a fabrication-ready one, making it essential viewing for any PCB designer focused on design for manufacturability.
