The 5 monkeys experiment is a story about the power of habit, and how it can control behavior. In the story, 5 monkeys are placed in a cage with a ladder. At the top of the ladder are bananas. Monkeys love bananas. Every time a monkey climbed the ladder and tried to eat a banana, the scientists would pray the other 4 monkeys with icy water.
After this occurred a few times, the monkeys connected cause and effect. A monkey going up the ladder and eating a banana, would cause the other 4 monkeys to be soaked with icy water. Soon, the group would beat up any singular monkey that attempted to climb the ladder.
The experiment didn't stop there. The scientists started replacing one monkey with a new monkey, that had never been soaked with water. The monkey would, naturally, try to climb the ladder to get bananas. The four original monkeys would then proceed to attack the new comer. After a few trials, the scientists replaced another one of the original monkeys with a newcomer. Sure enough, the newcomer would go after the bananas, causing not only the 3 remaining original monkeys, but also the other newcomer to beat up the newest member.
The scientists repeated this, until ultimately, there were 5 monkeys in the cage. NONE of them had ever been sprayed with water, but would still beat up any monkey that dared climb the ladder. No one got bananas.
