Before you can build a shoe, you must understand your shoe last. The shoe last is a three-dimensional mold that acts as an anatomical copy of the human foot, and it is the foundation where you apply your footwear design, make your pattern, and last your shoes.

Here are 5 critical things you must know about shoe lasts and their opening mechanisms:

1. Choose the Right Material for the Job
Shoe lasts are primarily made from wood, plastic, or aluminum. Plastic lasts are the most commonly used material for both mass production and bespoke shoemaking. Wooden lasts are traditional and used for tailored, bespoke shoemaking, while aluminum lasts are specifically placed in high-temperature ovens for shoe sole molding.

2. Every Shoe Type Needs a Specific Last (With One Exception)
Generally, you cannot use one basic last for every style. You must use a sandal last for sandals (which features a reduced toe allowance), a pump last for high heels, or a lace-up shoe last for traditional footwear like Derby and Oxford shoes. If you are making boots with fastenings like zippers or laces, you typically need a specific boot last.
Important Note: This rule applies only to people who do not know the secret in pattern construction that can be used to overcome this limitation! I teach exactly how to bypass this rule using advanced pattern construction in my online shoemaking courses.

3. Last Openings Prevent Damage to Your Shoes
After lasting, your shoes will fit very tightly around the mold. To take your finished shoes off the last easily and without damaging them, many lasts have an inner spring and consist of several parts that allow the last to be opened or shortened.

4. Real Moccasins and Cowboy Boots Require Specific Openings
The type of last opening usually does not matter for most standard shoes, but there are major exceptions. For real moccasins, you must sew the upper first and then place it on the last. Because of this, you must use a last with a sliding hinge, where the back part pushes upwards to shorten the last so the already sewn upper can be slipped on and off. Additionally, traditional cowboy boots require their own dedicated cowboy boot last with a V-shape opening. You cannot get around this unless you know the specific techniques to adjust a standard cone-hinged last for cowboy boots, exactly like I teach in my Cowboy Boot Course.

5. Know Your Last's Opening Mechanism
Aside from the sliding hinge and V-shape, there are other common opening types you will encounter. The folding hinge last opens by folding the back part upwards to shorten the last. The removable cone last has a top instep part that can be completely removed by clicking the spring's pin, often by placing a tool like a screwdriver inside a hole. Conversely, lasts with one solid construction do not open at all; these are mostly sandal lasts because sandals have open uppers that are easy to take off the last.
