One of the most important parts of a shoe is something you'll probably never see.

When people begin learning shoemaking, they usually focus on leather, shoe patterns, stitching, or choosing the right shoe last. Those are all essential. But hidden inside many well-made shoes is another component that plays a critical role in how the shoe performs: the steel shank.

Most people never notice it because it's completely hidden inside the construction. Yet without it, many shoes would lose their shape, stability, and long-term support.

A steel shank is embedded inside the insole, between its two layers. Although it's completely hidden from view, it reinforces the arch area of the shoe, prevents excessive flexing, and provides the structural support needed to maintain the shoe's shape over time.

This becomes especially important in high heels.

Without a properly selected steel shank, the arch of a high-heeled shoe can gradually collapse under constant pressure. The shoe loses stability, the heel becomes less secure, and the overall construction weakens over time. A small piece of steel quietly carries a tremendous amount of responsibility.

But steel shanks aren't just for high heels.

I recommend using them in almost every type of handmade footwear, including dress shoes, Oxford shoes, Derby shoes, loafers, boots, and many other styles. They add structural support, improve durability, and help the shoe maintain its original shape after years of wear.

The main exceptions are footwear that is intentionally designed to flex naturally, such as barefoot shoes and many athletic or sports shoes, where unrestricted movement is part of the design philosophy.

One thing I've learned after more than two decades of designing and making shoes is that great footwear is built from dozens of details most people never notice. A customer may admire the leather, the stitching, or the overall design, but the quality of a shoe often depends on the components hidden inside—the shoe last that creates the correct proportions, the insole construction that supports the foot, and the steel shank that strengthens the entire structure.

These hidden elements are what separate footwear that simply looks good from footwear that continues to perform well for years.

That's why, in my online shoemaking courses, I don't just teach how to make shoes—I teach why every material and every construction choice matters. Understanding shoemaking supplies isn't about collecting tools and materials. It's about knowing the purpose of every component and how each one contributes to building comfortable, durable, and professional-quality footwear.

Sometimes the most important part of a shoe is the one no one ever sees.
