What happens when you put a big group of recumbent trikes, handcycles, adaptive bikes and a few determined cyclists together on one of Georgia’s best rail trails?

You end up riding a LOT farther than expected. 😂

In this episode of the Van & Trike Tour, I’m riding Georgia’s beautiful Silver Comet Trail with the crew from Catalyst Sports — an organization helping people with physical disabilities get outside and experience adaptive sports.

We started the morning with around 18 riders and a huge variety of bikes, trikes and adaptive cycles. Catalyst provides adaptive equipment, fittings, rentals and supported group rides, giving riders who might otherwise have difficulty accessing cycling an opportunity to get out on the trail.

And what a trail to do it on.

The Silver Comet Trail is a 61.5-mile paved rail trail running from Smyrna, Georgia to the Alabama state line, where it connects with Alabama’s Chief Ladiga Trail. Long forest corridors, old railroad bridges, plenty of shade and relatively gentle grades make this an incredible place to spend a day on three wheels.

Along the way we also crossed paths with riders from Cycology Bike Shop in Hiram, Georgia. They organize regular group rides on the Silver Comet, including trike rides — and naturally, our groups started mixing together.

What began as a relatively casual morning ride eventually turned into roughly 44 miles for me.

There were beautiful trails, drone flights, new friends, a broken camera gimbal, some serious miles… and unfortunately, my van was sitting in a repair shop through the whole thing.

Just another day on the Van & Trike Tour.

🚐 VAN & TRIKE TOUR

I’m traveling around the United States in my self-built camper van, visiting recumbent trike shops, manufacturers, cycling organizations and riders — and exploring some great places to ride along the way.
