40 years ago the Anglo Irish Agreement was signed by the British and Irish Governments. At a time of deep divisions, it was a remarkable feat of diplomacy that proved to be a stepping stone towards peace in Northern Ireland.
It was also a landmark moment in British-Irish relations that helped forge a closer relationship between these islands. For the first time, the Irish Government’s role in Northern Ireland was formally recognised by London, laying the groundwork for a British-Irish partnership that would drive the peace process.
The Agreement also committed to promote reconciliation across communities and delivered real improvements in areas like fair employment, policing, and freedom of expression.
The new spirit of cooperation helped to drive the peace process and shaped the British and Irish Governments' roles as co-guarantors of the Good Friday Agreement today.
The Anglo Irish Agreement also marked the beginning of increased support from the international community in the peace process. In particular from the US, Canada, Europe, South Africa and others.
With closer relationships East and West between Britain and Ireland and with support of the international community, the peace process culminated in the Good Friday Agreement, bringing three decades of political violence in Northern Ireland to an end.
