The main purposes of this, my third car camping with bike outing, were to, first, empty the car of all my gear and not, as I did on previous two trips, use it for storing things overnight or even open the doors again and, secondly, to experiment with using my new tarp over my two-person tent instead of the rain fly that goes with the tent. I succeeded with both (though I may have accessed the car once or twice) to my satisfaction. Everything I brought was packed in my two Ortlieb panniers and my Armourain Motorcycle Crash Bag that fits in the bike’s front basket. Things not in bags but would go on rear rack of bike were I actually bikecamping are my ground cloth, kneel pad, tent, tarp, poles and stakes, fold up chair and quilt. This time the only things I forgot were the kneeling pad and air mattress cover!
In the video, I discuss the trip from the comfort of my fold up chair under the tarp in what serves as an overhang or “portico” formed by the tarp, an advantage of using a 3m x 3m tarp together with a tent! I was going to include video clips of my setting up the tarp but decided to make it its own, short video named “Setting Up Tarp for Bikecamping.” In another short video named “Spraying Tarp and Tent with Permethrin” I show setting up the tent and the tarp so I could spray them with Permethrin, a chemical that supposedly wards off ticks and other crawly creatures. I also discuss my plans for my first real overnight bikecamping trip on the Virginia Capital Trail between Jamestown/Williamsburg and Richmond. Other trips I’m planning are on Virginia’s New River Trail, the Torrey Brown Trail in Maryland which links to the York Heritage Trail in Pennsylvania. Another is part of the Delaware & Lehigh Trail. Our granddaughter and her husband are moving to Raleigh, NC soon so I’m hoping to park at their house and do some bikecamping, if possible, on the many Raleigh-Durham trails.
