Fly through the mystical wonderland of cortex in this render from Eyewire player Kfay aka Anthony Hernandez! In this animation you see large somas (cell bodies) of pyramidal neurons found in Layer II/III of mouse primary visual cortex. The long branches are dendrites covered in thorn-like protrusions called spines that stick out along their lengths. Each spine is the receiving side of a synapse from an axon of another neuron.

Neurons reconstructed by Sebastian Seung's Lab at the Princeton Neuroscience Institute from image data acquired by The Allen Institute for Brain Sciences and Baylor College of Medicine. This project is funded by the IARPA MICrONS program.
