To get the best out of 3D printing, it helps if you can design your own parts. In this tutorial series, we will learn to use a free 3D CAD program to do just that.
In this episode, I demonstrate how to create technical drawings based on a 3D model. We cover creating multiple views across multiple sheets, dimensioning, scale, and title blocks. We also cover more advanced techniques such as section and auxiliary views, plus assembly drawings with a labelled bill of materials.
Thanks to my patron Richard for requesting this tutorial.

![3D printer trends are limiting mainstream acceptance: The 3D printing paradox
3D printing has so much potential, but instead of moving towards a future where each household has access to on demand manufacturing, instead it is becoming more niche. In this video we discuss the 3D printing paradox, where the habits of manufacturers limit their sales and keep 3D printing a tinker’s pursuit.
I’ve expressed my frustration before about the saturation of clone and ‘me too’ 3D printers, and my community survey told me most of you feel the same way. Until manufacturers start investing in R&D to make 3D printers foolproof and easy to understand, their sales will be limited. Surely there is a lot of money to be made for a company that can get it right.

To get the best out of 3D printing, it helps if you can design your own parts. In this tutorial series, we will learn to use a free 3D CAD program to do just that.
In this episode, I fill in some blanks by showcasing some features requested by viewers. We cover organisation, the revolve and sweep tools, advanced fillet and chamfer options, organic shapes with surfaces, export to DXF, surface textures/patterns and how to avoid support.
A future video is planned where I design a more complex part from start to finish to show all of the little problems and how to fix them.

I’ve seen people complain in the comments that new age 3D printers like those from Bambu Lab are hard to work on, with components hidden in hard to reach areas. In short, these machines are not designed for disassembly and reparability in mind. In this video, I undertake a series of fixes in Bambu Lab printers and compare the process to more traditional designs.

Check out my 2nd channel, TT Racing: https://www.youtube.com/@ttracingYT
Previously, I had invested quite a bit of time and effort into modifying a Creality Ender 5 to have an enclosed and actively heated chamber. The addition of the Bambu Lab X1C to my studio has made the Ender 5 redundant, however, so in this video I remove all of the heated enclosure parts, and fit the Hero Me gen 7 part cooling system.
If it feels like at some times I’m being vague, that’s on purpose. The documentation is thorough but not free, so I had to make sure not to make it redundant. I’d recommend anyone undertaking this upgrade, to pay for the detailed PDF guide at a minimum.

![Flexible CAD designs using variables - 3D design for 3D printing pt8
To get the best out of 3D printing, it helps if you can design your own parts. In this tutorial series, we will learn to use a free 3D CAD program to do just that.
In this episode, we explore the concept of variables in CAD. By creating a named value outside of any sketches or features, we can then reference that value and use it to drive geometry. If the design needs changing, only a single variable needs editing rather than going through and editing each feature. Variables offer an efficient way to make your design flexible.
