Wagner Leitmotifs | 38 Purpose of the Sword : Der Ring Des Nibelungen @wagnerleitmotifs7654 | Uploaded September 2013 | Updated October 2024, 10 hours ago.
This leitmotif is first heard in scene 4 of Das Rheingold.
This motif, split into two segments, is derived from the sword motif, and symbolises Wotan's conception of his vision for Nothung.
The first segment revolves around the same octave leap down as the Sword motif, and is almost identical. The second segment segment replaces the octave with a fifth followed by two steps upwards (a form which Wagner likes: leap down then stepwise rise) which forms the basis for a number of subsidiary motifs.
