30 It was all a dream
Living off the land
1
From Yuma back to Indiana,
With a dream tested and true,
Moving back onto the land,
It was nineteen sixty-two.
2
We would grow our own food there,
And chop all our own wood,
It would be a self-sufficient homestead,
And we all understood.
3
It was Dad’s dream of independence,
Not relying on a job,
To buy things we didn’t need,
It was separation from the mob.
4
But the farm was only one-hundred acres,
And most of it was hills,
And nothing to sell or trade away,
To pay our non-self-sufficient bills.
5
The time of the small family farm,
Was way and yonder gone,
Fact is if that time ever was,
It didn’t last very long.
6
Our garden was a total flop,
Our pigs tore down the fence,
We mostly ate our chickens up,
Eggs were a dozen for ten cents.
7
I knew the dream was over,
When we left the chickens all alone,
Dad went out and got a job
And the pigs found a new home,
