30 dead after mountain of rubbish collapses in Guinea.
A massive heap of refuse collapsed at the largest landfill in Guinea’s capital, Conakry, early Sunday, killing at least 30 people, according to government authorities.
Heavy rains began around 2 a.m. and washed over the waste at the Dar Es Salam landfill, triggering a landslide that buried nearby shacks.
Six people were seriously injured and several homes were destroyed, while search and rescue teams continued working to locate possible survivors.
The open-air landfill, which serves as the largest waste dump in Conakry, had been scheduled for closure on Sunday, according to Lt. Col. Baldé Mamadou Bailo, sanitation officer for the military engineering battalion.
Authorities said residents living near the landfill had previously received eviction notices, prompting many families to leave the area. However, several others remained nearby when the disaster occurred.
Dienabou Touré, the minister of territorial administration and decentralisation, said the government would relocate the remaining families to safer areas.
The disaster highlights the challenges facing Guinea, a mineral-rich country that has significant deposits of bauxite, iron ore, gold and diamonds. Despite its natural resources, the World Bank estimates that 43.7% of the population lives below the national poverty line.
