🎈Looking for simple watercolor exercises that actually improve your control?

If your paint feels like it has a mind of its own, you’re not alone.

Watercolor does take time to understand… but a few simple exercises can make a huge difference.

Before jumping into full paintings, it’s worth slowing down and building control. These small drills will help you feel more confident with both your water and your brush, which affects everything you paint later on.

3 simple (and fun!) watercolor exercises to build control:

👉 Irregular lines
Load your brush and create a single line across your paper, letting it change in thickness. Play with pressure to go from thin to thick. This helps you understand how your brush responds.

👉 Simple shapes (like triangles)
Fill in shapes using flat or variegated washes. Try dropping in a second color while the first layer is still wet to practice timing and water control.

👉 Curved strokes & C-strokes
Practice smooth, flowing curves by rotating your hand and arm. Think about the path before you paint it. This builds confidence and fluidity in your marks.

These might seem basic, but they’re foundational. The more comfortable you get here, the easier everything else becomes.
