It is meant solely as an overview of some of the concepts and techniques involved, to help you decide if you would like to stitch the Britomart sampler (or another project) reversibly, and if so, how much supplemental instruction you will need to do so. Tutorial: embellishing cross stitch with sequins Katie Strachan Embroidery 2024-07-31 | This tutorial will teach you how to embellish your cross stitch finishes with sequins and beads for a fabulously sparkly and textured look.The how to (after the introduction on types of sequins and what to look for) starts at 7:26 - the overhead mount starts sagging and I am working partially out of frame to start with, but corrected this, please bear with me!Sequins come in flat (my preference) and cupped shapes, and a variety of finishes: gloss (no applied finish), matte, luster, iridescent/iris, metallic, etc; can be opaque or transparent; and a wide range of sizes. I recommend a mix of sizes between 2-6 mm for best results that are scaled to your stitching. I used 3, 4, and 5 mm transparent red iridescent sequins for this tutorial. Many of my own sequins are quite old and were purchased in person at a bead store in downtown Los Angeles, or a needlepoint store near me, now closed. So I do not have sources for most of what's seen here (they're not even labeled, that anyone would ever take an interest in my sequins never occurred to me!), but Bedecked and Beadazzled is an online needlepoint source that stocks sequins appropriately scaled to cross stitch. They will not stock everything shown here as it's not where I bought my own, but it's a wonderful place to start: bedeckedandbeadazzled.com/beads/the-collection-sequinsYou also need beads to anchor your sequins, I recommend size 15/0 seed beads, and generally use a Miyuki clear transparent (for white or clear gloss, most of what I've done), or transparent ruby (for red, as seen here), which I usually purchase from Caravan Beads or Artbeads. Tutorial: pinkeep finishing Katie Strachan Embroidery 2024-04-23 | This tutorial will teach you how to finish a pinkeep with magnetic interior to hold pins and needles, with ribbon ties and a contrast lining. I am demonstrating on the spring Tiny Treasures kit, Stacy Nash's Feathered Nest pinkeep, which will be released on May 7 at 8:15 AM PDT at katie-strachan.com/shop but the technique is equally suitable for many other charts. I have used the same method on Stacy Nash's I Will Cut You pinkeep (full details below materials list)Needed for this tutorial:Cardstock or bristol paper for liningMat board for exteriorFelt to pad the mat boardMistyfuse or similar double faced interfacing to bond the lining/cardstockLining fabric - I'm using Liberty Lawn here but any fabric you have in stash will workStrong magnets - I've used 1/8 x 1/16 inch rare earth magnetsTacky glue to glue your felt paddingYour stitched piece, prepared for finishingRibbon for finishing, at least 27 inches - I recommend the 7mm width of River Silks ribbon - I had said in the video that NIAH carried this, but it appears that's no longer the case.
