The ‘Conflict motif’ is a complex one to keep track of. The motif consists of several musical elements, including (most notably) two brief repeating trombone notes, preceded by Giacchino's signature ‘pencil harp’ while a consistent high string note builds to a crescendo. Some of these elements may come and go with each appearance – for instance, even the trombone is absent when Eko slams Charlie against a tree in "The 23rd Psalm". The ‘Conflict motif’ ends up tying together two scenes involving Shannon's death, as well as two scenes involving Mr. Eko effortlessly intimidating fellow crash survivors.
