Scripture to read and think about today: Psalm 143:8
Psalm 143:8 “Let the morning bring me word of Your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in You. Show me the way I should go, for to You I entrust my life.”
That’s so beautiful. I have it framed in my bedroom and pray it each morning before I begin my day. I’ll be honest, though, I’ve never really known what to do with the Psalms. One minute you’re praising, the next minute you’re lamenting, and the next minute you’re asking God to strike down your enemies. For example, the first seven verses of that Psalm I quoted have David crying for help, lamenting over his soul being crushed, asking for answers, yet praising God and remembering His works. It’s all over the place.
The constant emotional rollercoaster David seems to ride in the Psalms always had me wanting to jump ahead to what I thought were more interesting parts of Scripture. You know, the instructions, the directions, the wisdom to do life God’s way. As a matter of fact, I’m like, let’s move past the flowery language and straight to Proverbs, where it’s cut and dry. Black and white. Give me a list of what I should do and not do, because it’s easy, and I can follow that.
The irony for me is that as I’ve been reading this year, I got to the Psalms right as I found myself in an unfamiliar, emotional, and chaotic season full of change and hardship. One minute I’m excited, the next minute I’m grieving. Up and down over and over, and yet every morning I was still reading in Psalms, and it felt like I was finally connecting with the very Scriptures that used to confuse me.
Like David, I found myself crying for help, lamenting over my soul feeling crushed, asking for answers, yet praising God and remembering His works. And that’s it, guys. The beauty of the Psalms to me is that God wants to be with us. In the highs and the lows, the good and the bad.
So in this time of prayer and fasting, I encourage you, don’t hold anything back from the Lord. Allow the Father to hear your sorrows along with your praise. Know that we don’t have to have it figured out to approach the throne of grace. I still don’t have this season figured out. But I know God is good, and His love endures forever. That love draws us to Himself.
So pray with me: “Let the morning bring me word of Your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in You. Show me the way I should go, for to You I entrust my life.” May this prayer be an invitation to come to God just as you are, trusting that His unfailing love will meet you wherever you are.
