Scripture to read and think about today: Matthew 6:17-18
Welcome to day one of our 21 days of Prayer and Fasting. Today, Shannon and I want to remind you of something important. Fasting is not about earning God’s attention. It is about giving Him yours.
Jesus makes this clear in Matthew 6:17–18 when He says, “But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Notice that Jesus did not say if you fast. He said when you fast.
Fasting was never meant to be a religious punishment, even though at times it can feel like one. Instead, it is a relational invitation. It is the intentional creation of space in a world filled with noise, distraction, and constant input, so that we can hear the voice of God more clearly.
Lisa Bevere once said, “Fasting is not about twisting God’s arm. It’s about positioning your heart.” When we fast, we are not trying to move God closer to us. We are letting Him move the clutter out of our way. Sometimes what God wants to give us has been blocked by our own distractions, appetites, or routines. Fasting helps reorder those priorities. It reminds our bodies that our spirit is in charge.
As you begin day one, do not focus on what you are giving up. Focus instead on what you are gaining. Ask the Lord a simple but powerful question: What do You want me to fill the space with that I am creating? That space will be filled with something. Let God be the one who directs it.
As you embark on these 21 days, lean into the devotionals, get into the Word, and pray intentionally. We are fully expecting that God is going to do amazing things in each of your lives during this season. God bless you.
Prayer
Father, as we set aside this time, we ask that You draw our hearts closer to You. Quiet the noise around us and within us. Fill the hunger with Your presence, and teach each of us to depend on You more fully. We are so thankful for You. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
