Scripture to read and think about today: Matthew 6

I recently received a message from someone telling me to send him $200. He needed me to send the funds to get him out of a situation that he had created for himself.
Here is the thing. I don’t just spend money because someone else tells me to. When it comes to our family finances, it’s not an open checkbook to be spent by others. Our finances are a resource that we possess. As such, through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we decide where and how they will be spent.
I would say that most of you view your finances the same way. You don’t allow others to tell you how to spend your money, either. It isn’t that we don’t walk with a spirit of generosity; rather, our money is ours to give and not someone else’s to take.
I believe that is because we view our finances as one of the most valuable assets we possess. So, we protect it. But what if I told you that you had an asset that was even more valuable than your finances?
Your time.
Yet, most of the time I don’t protect my time the same way I protect my finances. In fact, I often liberally allow others to spend my time for me. Maybe it is because it feels good to be “needed”, or maybe I just feel guilty about saying no to someone. Maybe I overcommit, or maybe I am without direction.
But once my time is gone, it’s gone. It’s a resource that doesn’t replenish. And when my time account is at zero, I am depleted of what I need to be in relationship with God, to serve my family, and to walk out my calling.
I am reminded of how intentional Jesus was with His time. While Jesus offered a tremendous amount of access to his life, and we never see him appearing rushed; we also saw a very intentional approach to how and where Jesus spent his time.
In Matthew 14 there is this moment when the crowds and the disciples are gathered around as Jesus is teaching thousands of people. As that moment came to a close, Jesus sent the disciples ahead of him, designating a time of rest and prayer.
In Mark 1 and Luke 4, Jesus separated from the larger crowds to visit other communities. He didn’t allow his presence and time to be monopolized. Rather than chasing everyone who disagreed with Jesus, He continually spent time investing into his closest 12 disciples.
Jesus was incredibly intentional with his time.
As we navigate moments of fasting like we are in now, we have an opportunity to do the same. To intentionally spend our time. In Matthew 6 Jesus reminded us that where our treasure is, there our heart will be also. And guess what, our time is a treasure.
We only get one deposit each morning. Once it’s spent, it’s spent. There are no transfers, there are no returns.
So may we be more intentional in how and where we invest our time; budgeting it in a way that brings vibrancy to our relationship with God, and allows us to fulfill the unique missions He has for each of us.
