The BMW Group has completed a $1.7 billion investment in its South Carolina operations, marking the successful expansion of Plant Spartanburg and the construction of the new Plant Woodruff to lay the groundwork for domestic electric vehicle assembly. Celebrated at the "Home of X" event at BMW's largest global plant, this milestone coincided with the world premiere of the new fifth-generation BMW X5. Reflecting BMW’s technology-open strategy, the new X5 will be the brand's first vehicle built on a single assembly line capable of supporting five distinct drivetrain options: internal combustion, battery electric, plug-in hybrid, diesel, and hydrogen fuel cell. Furthermore, BMW confirmed that the fully electric iX5 will begin U.S. assembly before the end of 2026, serving as the first of at least six fully electric models planned for U.S. production by 2030. To optimize this high-tech manufacturing network, both facilities are deeply integrating the principles of the BMW iFACTORY, leveraging artificial intelligence, digital twins, and humanoid robotics to maximize production efficiency and flexibility.
