2026 MG4. The New King of Budget EVs?
The 2026 MG4 receives a major refresh with a longer and more aerodynamic body measuring around 4,395 mm in length, giving the electric hatchback a sleeker and more premium appearance. The updated exterior also introduces a redesigned rear spoiler, fresh 18-inch alloy wheels, and improved airflow management for better efficiency. Inside, the cabin has been modernized with a larger 15.6-inch infotainment display, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, and a redesigned center console featuring a wireless phone charging pad. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now standard on most trims, while higher-end versions add heated and ventilated front seats along with a heat pump system for improved energy efficiency in varying climates.
Under the skin, the new MG4 lineup offers several battery and performance configurations to suit different buyers. Entry-level versions such as the Urban trim use a smaller battery pack ranging from approximately 42.8 kWh to 51 kWh, delivering a WLTP range between 316 km and 437 km depending on specification. Long Range and Essence variants step up to a 64 kWh battery paired with a rear-wheel-drive electric motor producing 140 kW and 350 Nm of torque, enabling an estimated WLTP driving range of around 452 km. Fast-charging capability has also been upgraded, with support for up to 140 kW DC charging that significantly reduces charging times during long-distance travel.
Performance enthusiasts can opt for the flagship MG4 XPOWER, which continues as the high-performance variant with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup producing a combined 320 kW and 600 Nm of torque. This model delivers much quicker acceleration while retaining the practicality and technology of the standard MG4 range. Across the lineup, MG has also enhanced the advanced driver assistance systems with improved safety and semi-autonomous driving functions, making the 2026 MG4 more competitive in the growing global EV market.
The 2026 MG4 earns its "budget king" title by maintaining a starting price roughly 20% lower than comparable European and Korean electric hatchbacks. The 2026 MG4 Urban is roughly £3,500 ($7,000 AUD) cheaper than the previous entry-level RWD model it replaces.
