Key Note Speaker: Hamza Abbasi '16, M.D.
Migrations of Meaning: Moral Labor of Life's Great Transitions
The Tucker Center is excited to sponsor the Multifaith Baccalaureate Service, which will feature Hamza Abbasi, '16., M.D., as well as student speakers and the Gospel Choir. Dr. Hamza Abbasi is an internal medicine physician and hospitalist at Stanford University Hospital and the Palo Alto Medical Foundation (PAMF). A Dartmouth College alumnus, he earned his degree in Neuroscience and Public Policy, during which time he served as Student Director of the Tucker Center for Spiritual and Ethical Life and conducted research at the Rockefeller Center for Public Policy, publishing on Affordable Housing and Natural Gas.
After earning his MD from Northwestern University and completing his residency at Scripps, Dr. Abbasi served at the bedside during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Witnessing the profound loss and resilience of that era inspired his book, Wisdom of the Dying. The work utilizes a multidisciplinary, evidence-based approach (synthesizing medicine, psychology, and neuroscience) to explore the life lessons patients learned, what gave their existence meaning, and the regrets they carried in their final moments.
This humanistic perspective informs both his clinical practice and his leadership on PAMF's Government Affairs committee. Dr. Abbasi is honored to return to Hanover as this year's Baccalaureate speaker to celebrate the community where his commitment to multifaith advocacy and the intersection of science and policy first took root.
